BTW, Marines have to qualify by hitting a target at a half mile away. Yet according to some, you can't even shoot that far.
What weapon are they qualifying with that requires hitting a target a half mile away, a mortar?
A WELL trained sniper w/ a sniper rifle may be hitting targets 800 - 1000 meters out, but the typical Marine can not, and their issued weapon doesn't have sufficient effective range to hit a target that far out, anyway.
