Anyone ever successfully tapped a one-piece crank to 9/16"? How did it
go? Or does anyone know of a 1/2" clipless pedal or way to modify?

Tapping most one-piece cranks to 9/16" thread would cut the crank in
two at the pedal eye.
I seem to recall seeing some 1/2" thread Wellgo (?) clipless pedals,
but I can't find them right now.

The only thing that I know you could do is to use a 9/16" to 1/2" pedal
adapter like from Harris Cyclery http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/pedals.html
All the cranks that I see won't have enough metal left after you drill and
tap them out. But maybe some do though.
These size taps aren't all that cheap either, and you need both the left and
right hand thread taps. The other thing is you have to use a good drill
press and a lot of precision to get the holes straight and tap it out
straight too, otherwise the pedals may have a wobble to them that wull drive
you crazy.

No can do.
Get a conversion set to run aluminum cranks in your OPC shell.

The common Ashtabula-style cranks seen on department-store bikes don't
have enough meat in the ends to permit this to be done safely. Some
BMX versions would be able to handle it. The real question, IMO, is
why bother? By the time you round up a suitable crank, drill it, and
get the left-hand tap or have the hole threaded, you could mount up a
three-piece setup using a set of adapter bearings and make the whole
project a lot less work.

This is not physically possible. If you made the crank fat enough to
support a 9/16" pedal mounting hole, it would not fit through the
bearing cones, so you wouldn't be able to install it.

1/2" clipless pedals were once available, I bought a pair for my 1916
Mead Ranger. Unfortunately they've gone extinct.
One of these days some pedal manufacturer is going to wake up to this
unmet need and make a bundle of money. I get a LOT of requests for such
pedals, mainly for use on exercise "bikes."

I think you missed his attempted at humor. "Cheet" should be read like

Would it not be possible to take an existing pedal spindle, turn down
the threaded area, and roll or cut new threads so it would fit a
½-inch crank? However, I would not expect this to be economical unless
one really needed to do so (e.g. Mr. Brown's referenced Mead Ranger).

Why bother? Well, a friend and I are working on a project. We want to
make a statement that the guys with the nicest toys don't always have

I got the joke the first time. I still think he didn't know what OPC meant.
