Great initiative by the city, maybe they will see the sense in a monitored cycle parking facility
for the future.

Agreed. I believe similar schemes have been tried in the North of England (and may still exist) -
IIRC one was a café, a bike shop and a bike park.

I can see how in some areas (with spiralling rent costs) how financial sustanability could be a
problem; for instance although there is loads of empty property in Reading [1] its rental price is
way beyond the price range of those who would wish to start up such a venture.

If the price was right I would certainly pay for such a facility, rather than trust my bike to the
Sheffield Stands in town; although the CCTV ops and old bill *do* look out for them when they can
I've also noticed a lot of *vandalism* of parked bikes 🙁 (although this happens to cars as well).

Virtually every town has a multi-storey car park -- most with some type of CCTV. It would not be
rocket science for Local Authorities to turn over one or two car parking places to 'secure' bike
parking. A few Sheffields and Bob's yer uncle!!

Leicester has had a bike park for some years. It is a bike shop as well, so not only can you go
round the shops, or go to work, you can also come back to a fully repaired bike. Jo

Ah - that was the one I meant. Apologies for the geographical ambiguity; I am a southerner so to me
Leicester *is* "The North" 😉

I thought it had folded though due to financial problems; maybe this was another place I was
confusing it with or it is under new management.

If it is still going thats even better. Does the place have a website at all (or do you know the
name of it so I can google for it?)

In the Reading car parks the cars are regularly busted into and/or vandalised; and the local
pin-heads[1] of which there are a large number use the place as a shooting gallery. I don't think
there are as many rentaguards as there should be, and even then how many of them are going to risk
being stuck with a possibly contaminated set of "works" for trying to move on a potential scally?

Even with CCTV - who is watching it? There are over 300 cameras which can be patched through to
Reading CCTV control centre and only one pair of eyes watching them if there are no on-site guards.

Given the above (in Reading at least) i would think a bike would be even less safe than on the main
streets, where there are better cameras and sometimes even bobbies.... [2]

I think the Cambridge idea is brilliant though, especially with the lockers if you have a
particularly valuable bike. £10 a month is peanuts compared to city centre parking charges. What are
theses lockers like though? I remember reading a discussion on one somewhere which alleged that
various gaps (which also presented a potential insecurity) had to be introduced into some, partly to
dissuade the homeless / impecunious from renting them out to sleep in! [3]

[1] street slang for user of injectable drugs (usually heroin or amphetamine)
[2] a few of the local ones are cyclists, either as part of duties or for sport/fitness. Actually
Reading is crawling with old bill of an evening, thanks to Operation "Effusion" (to nick
pissheads beating the [censored] out of one another)
[3] also a problem with those "lok n store" units!
