Apologies if you know this already, a couple of snippets I read in Southwark News. The Tour stage will start in the Mall and go along the Thames, but racing will actually start on Tower Bridge. Someone please enlighten us with the French term for 'parade lap'. Race HQ will be at Excel for the first two days, and will move to Canterbury. There is also a great article on the history of Herne Hill velodrome, complete with a picture of the donkey derby with real racing donkeys.

This sort of displaced start is very common, the point from which the riders set off is called the "départ fictif" and the point at which the racing starts, indicated by the race director waving a flag from his car, is called the "départ réel".

The spirit is to have a slow warmup, with a good chance for the public to see the riders having a chat or sipping some warm tea.
No sprint starts in the TdF (exception made for the CLMs, individual or team, where the athletes warm up beforehand on a standing bike).
