  1. So it's OT -- but since I had my ribs broken on Sunday 29 Jan ( see
"Another blind driver) I haven't had a complete immersion and long soak in
bath since the Thursday before the "accident". I haven't dared sit in a
filled tub (fearing inability to get out of it) and have on two occasions
just kneeled down and done an all over sort of wash --- OK for getting
clean but not fulfilling the need for a long very hot soak with a glass of
    wine and a good book.

Well today I reckoned that my rib cage would stand it and I have just
climbed out ( fairly painlessly) after a delicious 2 hour soak ( including a
refurbish with hot water and then a complete refill!) with one of my
favourite rereadable books and a 3 glasses of Santa Ynez Valley Shiraz.

    Talk about feeling good!!

2 hours?! They should call you Wrinkly! I don't think I've *EVER* been in a
bath 15 minutes, let alone 2 hours .. Do you have some special type of bath?

Maybe he couldn't get out without the help of the 3 glasses of Santa Ynez
    Valley Shiraz anaesthetic.

Oh you don't know what you are missing... one of life's great pleasures is a
good long soak in a hot bath... filled with scented bubbles, whilst quaffing
a decent glass of fermented juice of grape and reading a favourite book...
    *lovely*

    Cheers, helen s

Oh no just a particular mind set with a sort of decadence reminiscent of
ancient Roman times. My bathroom has a bookshelf and a small wine rack too!
I have always felt that if I want to get myself clean I will have a shower
but a bath is there to experience relaxation and pleasure.

However I rarely indulge in such an prolonged soak as I did today -- but an
    hour isn't unusual for me!!!!!!!!!!

I read something once about the statistical distribution of bath
durations. There are people that basically only ever have a 10 minute
bath, and people that only ever have a 50-60 minute bath. The
10-minute region contains more women, the 50-minute one contains more
    men.

With respect to 'special bath' - having very hot hot water helps, so
you can do a refurbish without affecting total volume too much.

Personally, I tend to work & think well in the bath - so if I have a
technical document to read, I'll read it in the bath. Even if I
don't, I expect my mean bath duration is about an hour. I have been
known to read an entire paperback in one bath, but to be honest 2
hours plus is unusually long. I tend not to get in the bath unless
there's an hour or so available.

The only exception tends to be if I take a programming text book in
with me because I'm struggling on some concept, then (say) 7 minutes
in suddenly have a possible flash of understanding, at which point it
becomes infuriatingly impossible to stay in place, I have to get out
of the bath and try it out. What I really (_really_ _really_) want is
a lightweight waterproof wireless X-terminal, then I really could stay
in for hours. Anyone know of anything even approaching such a device?

You really only need a waterproof keybard don't you?

Sadly not - I'd be worried about condensation inside the workings of a
PC that was in the bathroom. Conceptually, I suppose I could mount a
PC and projector outside, projecting through a porthole in the wall
(or from within a waterproof externally vented box) onto a wall of the
bathroom, but it may not go down so well with management.

A screen would need to be above the bath. I'm not sure I want to sit
partly immersed in water below a mains-powered screen.

You're clearly not dedicated enough to the cause of computing in the
    bath.

    Requires:
1 x LCD screen (Which can be safely enclosed if needs be, by using
    forced air cooling)
1 x Trackball (With a huge sucker attached to stick it to the edge of
    the bath / tiles)
    1 x The afore-mentioned waterproof keyboard.

Mount the screen on a large angle poise arm so that it can be
positioned as necessary, relax, and accomplish. eBooks might also solve
    the soggy paperback problem.

You can buy IP54 laptops from http://www.rugged-systems.com/ which
admittedly isn't waterproof as such but you could use it with wet
    hands.

Many years ago I went to a well known biological equipment manufacturer
in search of a new chromatography system. They had on on demo, equipped
with a PC they claimed to be cold room compatible. In particualr it had
a funky little keyboard that they claimed could withstand total
immersion. Being a cheeky young PhD student I asked if they had a
bucket, which they happily provided (actually a 2 litre beaker).

It lasted about 3 minutes before the keyboard started sending random
stuff to the PC and died horribly.

We were looking at some Husky rugged laptops a good few years back.
They happily ran the software we wanted them to so I asked the
salesman how rugged they were. He threw it 6ft in the air and let it
land on the concrete. It worked perfectly, was completely waterproof
and you could read the screen in daylight. Ideal we thought until the
user pointed out that the keyboard was too small to use with gloved
hands and the waterproof membrane keyboard would soon fail when they
started using a bayonet to push the keys rather than take their gloves
    off.

    I haven't had a bath for about 50 years!

It was said that a couple of hundred years ago, and upper class gentleman,
was asked if he was clean, his answer was, 'clean, clean, of course I'm
clean, I have a bath every year whether I need it or not!'.

Couldn't face 2 hours in any kind of indoor bath. Nor, in this season,
an outdoor bath - at least not in .uk. Must be something he's not
    telling us.

Mind you, 3 glasses = 1 bottle around here. Reminds me of a humorous
postcode I acquired whilst living in (a well-known wine growing area of)
Italy, showing a very happy person in a nice hot bath, just pouring in
a little more .. um .. tinted water from a barrel.

See, I'm just a quick showerer, and a bit of a [censored] chef. I've already got
ideas on what i need in all environments. Mr "I read technical documents"
obviously hasn't pushed the boundaries. When they first mentioned internet
in fridges, I thought ... "that means I won't miss any of the internet". "I
can cook and browse at the same time."

Of course, it was all lies. No bloody internet fridges *anywhere*.

Never more than 15 minutes? You've missed out on one of life's greatest
pleasures! I've rarely spent less than an hour in a bath, and 3 (with
several hot refills) is not unknown.

Great way to relax after a day on the bike (though riding all day is
something I've not done for over a decade, must do it again when I get
    the new bike).
