What I've always been amazed by is the fact that the fire drew O2 in so
quickly that it reached hurricane velocity and sucked many people into the
fire. Many who were in shelters had the air sucked out of their lungs and
suffocated. At least it was so dreadful to Churchill that Col. Harris'
    strategy was rethought..RIP

News, by definition, is "hot off the press". Just as the word implies,
todays news is tommorrows fish and chips paper. If you don't care where it
comes from you are free to believe what bin Laden or the Iranian mullahs say
    in their latest diatribe.

Or That Lying Piece of [censored] Tony Blair? Or that Yankee-Doodle War Criminal
whose ass Blair seems to love kissing?

History. Please don't confuse the two. One requires ONLY an "open mind"
(aka susceptible consumer). The second demands more than the good conscious
of "openminded folks" to be interpreted correctly.

Yep Dresden was an open city, had very little of strategic or tactical
value. That was done as a pure terror for psychological impact attack
and did nothing to shorten the war.

    Here's the official defense:
    https://www.airforcehistory.hq.af.mil/PopTopics/dresden.htm

Personally, from all my research, I don't think it was necessary or
justified, and there are plenty of accounts of senior staff saying that
it was done to show the Nazis how ruthless we'd be if they didn't
surrender. Nagasaki and Hiroshima with conventional weapons in Europe.
I'm not speaking from politcal bias here. One of my units provided the
509th Bomb Wing, a member of 8th AF with it's communications along with
other services and I'm proud of both, but it was a real stretch to say
that, that scale of attack, using those weapons, done that way, at the
time it was done was needed.

On of the basic rules of good propeganda is it has to be believable.
And anyone who writes that there were 500K killed in Dresden has to be
totally ignorant. Even the Nazi propaganda at the time didn't go that
    high.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dresden#World_War_II

Civilian death estimates vary wildly largely as a result of propaganda
figures which received widespread publicity at the time, however the
most recently available evidence from Friedrich Reichart of Dresden
City Museum points to 25,000 deaths, which is less than the number
that died in Hamburg, but Dresden was a smaller city. Numbers between
25,000 - 140,000 have been used in official statistics with the
communist authorities of Dresden increasing their estimates across
time; estimates in Nazi Germany by the Ministry of Propoganda varied
between 350,000 and 400,000. At that time, Dresden's population was
600,000, but up to 200,000 refugees were living in cramped apartments
and passing through Dresden as the Russians were now only fifty miles
away. The entire inner city (15 square kilometres) was utterly
devastated, and other quarters were damaged to some degree, the many
villa quarters, however, on average much less than others.

Many of the higher estimates are based on a fake TB47 report (which
has been visibly altered). However the West German Federal Archive in
Koblenz discovered a genuine copy of TB47. The official "Final Report
and Situation (TB47)" produced by Reich Commander of the Order Police
a month after the bombings. "TB47" is probably a reasonable guide to
the order of casualty numbers. It states definite figures of between
18,000 and 22,000 with estimates of final numbers of 25,000 and
includes the interesting sentence "Since rumours far exceed the
reality, open use can be made of the actual figures."
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My opinion on Dresden -- They had it coming.

I believe he wanted to use laughing gas combined with gin and tonics.
After all, whiskey and rum worked on the indians. He also had the war
department develop that lethal joke described in a BBC documentary I saw
(where they had to translate it into German in pieces so the translators
wouldn't read it and die laughing). So it was a gentler form of chemical
    warfare he proposed using.

We disagree, but in context Dresden wasn't that bad. If we had to
fight that war over with today's handcuffs Britain would have 3rd
generation Nazis and be speaking German. We had our hands tied in
Vietnam and the resulting government slaughtered 750,000 enemies of the
revolution after Saigon fell. These were obvious criminals such as
teachers, doctors, professors etc..but no one has any sympathy for them
even though Vietnam is still one of the most repressive governments in
    the world.
    N. Korea is still a great place too.
The most common fallacy about torture is that we need to avoid it so
that it's not done top our troops. Well that's BS. It has been done to
our troops as a major, systematic, government approved policy in every
conflict since WW1, no matter what we did. There is little to no outcry
at all when they do it to our people compared to any abuse on our part.
Beheadings of aid workers are there and gone, sleep deprivation at
Gitmo is world wide front page news forever. I wouldn't object to our
troops being held to a higher standard if there was any real outrage or
attempt to hold the other side to any standard that wasn't anything
goes, but there isn't. When was the last time you saw CNN, BBC, The
Guardian, or one of the US networks do an indepth series of articles on
the atrocities committed by the other side? I see tons of stuff on
Gitmo, I saw tons of stuff on desecrated Qurans, but nothing on the
Saudis destroying any religious item that's not the approved Quran at
points of entry. They destroy more religious books in a week than the
US has been accused of in the history of Gitmo. Where's the outrage and
    the US press questions?

The Free French garrison at Brazzaville were also working on Grey Poupon
gas so it's not like the English had a lock on chemical weapons.
Americans didn't need chemical weapons because we had men like LCDR John
"If we run out of gas, we'll [censored] in the tanks" Waldron, of the famed
Torpedo 8 squadron on the U.S.S. Hornet.

    Bring 'em back alive Jack!
