  1. Any recommendations? I'm debating between Trek 7300 and an equivalent Giant? Anybody can recommend
either one? Whats the giant equivalent? Is either one better or worse? Any thoughts?

    THANKS IN ADVANCE.

I'm comparing a 7200 vs. Regents Park and the Giant has a much better spec ('03 anyway).

  3. do you know if there's a website where you can compare multiple brands, amazon.com style?

  4. The Trek hybrid line is made by Giant. In general Giant has a better spec for the price as they pay
less for their frames than the companies which use their frames.

Sort of I think. made by the Giant Bicycle Company of China, not the same as the 'Giant' company in
the US, altho I'm sure the Chinese Giant makes framesets for Giant/US-confused yet??

Isn't Giant in Taiwan? Technically that is the "other" China, but most people think of the communist
    country when you say "China".

I heard Giant is the largest frame maker in the world and thus make a lot of the other prestigious
    brand's bikes.

Being the largest doesn't mean the best. Giant does make many lower-end TREK models, but, as I
explained in an earlier message, Giant is capable of making some real junk, as well as nicer stuff.
It depends upon who's monitoring the output and how much effort (money) they want to put into it. In
some areas, they're simply not up to speed, particularly in wheels. No, I'm not talking about fancy
boutique stuff, but everyday 36-spoke 700c hybrid wheels. Seems that nobody's taught them how to
stress-relieve spokes, so they don't. It's really weird... they (not just Giant, by the way) do
*exactly* what they're told to do, and nothing more. If the company they're making stuff for doesn't
spec out every single little thing, corners *are* cut.

In TREKs case, they actually have people living overseas at the factories, keeping an eye on things
full-time. Smaller companies can't afford to do that. Nor do smaller companies often have the
long-term relationship needed for things to actually get better... the learning process may restart
each model year, particularly for those companies that simply go to the lowest bidder.

Fortunately, moderately-priced bikes found primarily in local bike shops are generally going to be
one step ahead of the rest, because mechanics get very picky, and quite vocal, about things they
don't like, and the LBS can always find another line if things get bad enough.
