Not me. But I'm curious too who does. I have never - ever - heard of,
known, or seen anyone bring their own. Why would you? You sign up for the
race, and they give you one. It isn't like you get a discount if you BYOCC.

save you time pre-race.

Worth buying your own ankle strap though - been to a couple of races
where they give out horrible cheap, scratchy straps that can leave you
bleeding.

At IMFL they made us buy the straps! Fortunately it was a good quality
neoprene strap, but it still seemed a bit cheezy.

As for owning one, I never really got it either. Personally, I think they
were selling to the ego in all of us. Having your own chip implies that
you are an experinced, elite, or whatever athlete, so you simply MUST
have one!

sorry don't post here much but I think I might be able to help on this
one...

buying a chip for triathlon isn't really worth the hassle as most organisers
issue one. However there are other events such as marathons, bike TT etc
where the champion chip kit is available - if you have your own chip you
register it with your entry and you get an exact time - I think at these
events you can also hire one for the day. This way not everyone has to pay
the additional fee if they don't want to - with tri because the number
racing are fairly small generally everyone needs to buy to cover the costs
etc.

No. I fail to understand the value.

Furthermore, they require a little more race administration on the part
of the volunteers. I see that as needless point-of-failure &
frustration.

After the race, I would walk around with a cloud over my head, waiting
for the RD to erroneously hit my credit card because I did not return
*their* chip. : (

I bought one years ago (mid '90's) as they were heavily advertised that
races would offer a discount off entry fees ($2 was mentioned). I also got
a gift cert for $25 at the time, which I applied to expo merchandise. I
think the chip cost me $35 ($10 after the cert). With the exception of two
races, no one has discounted entry fees. Seemed like a good idea at the
time. Wouldn't do it now.

I ran the Cooper River Bridge run in Charleston SC last year and they gave
a keepsake chip, with the picture of the bridge on it for us to keep.
There were some 35,000 in this 10k race so it may have been easier or
cheaper for them to just give the chips away. There may be more of this in
the future I'd expect, the chip costs have to be coming down.
