Douthat is my absolute favorite place in Virginia to ride.

We mostly do the loop clockwise from Start to Finish. Beards Gap to Brushy
Hollow is one of my favorite downhills to do on a XC bike. Many of the
trails there were built by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) back in the
1930's. The climb up Middle Mountain is beautifully bench cut and manages
to keep roughly the same pitch all the way up so it's easy to maintain a
steady rythm. If you're good at orienteering there's some trails leaving
the park and going off in the "George Jefferson" national forest for
exploration but there's a ton of trail inside the park.

Campground A is on the lake and is very nice. B has hookups on site and is
back in the woods more. Open beer bottles aren't allowed, just pour it in a
cup and it's cool.

My local club in VA used to do camping/biking outings there twice a year. I
could never manage to break away to go, but they always came back raving
about how good it was.
