Never bought any in this manner but I had to repair a motor not long ago and brought it to a place.
Me and this guy repaired the thing (he was nice enough to let me watch and he explained what he was
doing, etc.) and when he was done, the shimming was just a trifle too tight. I didn't know what
precision shims were - to me, they looked like washers, but he assured me that they are rather
precise. He had a few around, and tried a few until he thought it was pretty OK. I wound up changing
things, so that it was a bit looser, and have one or two extra shims that I'm keeping in case I need
them at some point - presumably, to repair this same motor.
Now, I'm guessing that you can get shims from a supplier of machine parts. You will have to scout
around and maybe ask some questions of people in the know about such things. Good luck.

BTW, are the "precision washers" you are looking for shaped like ordinary washers or some other
configuration?
