Well, I'm lucky enough to have a fellow bike racer as my orthopod...and his advice was quite simple--if it feels OK, then do it. I have a single fracture, right in the middle, dispaced about 3cm. After being fitted with a figure 8 brace, the pain was greatly reduced and I was on the trainer 2 days later, and was riding outside in about a week.
I raced on it at about 6 weeks (still in the figure 8)...not too smart, as I was warned that a crash would almost surely result in an operation...but I was lucky.
Squats?? Fortunately, I don't lift anymore!! It healed in an overlapping fashion, given the nature of the break, and squats will always be impossible.
Still, it seems everyone and every injury is different, and bear in mind the bone will still be healing for up to a year, so any crash in the first few months could be probramatic.
