Hi I could do with some advice please (as I'm a Campagnolo man myself ;-) ...
I've started doing a fair bit of tandem piloting recently, and we're in the market for a new rear 9 speed cassette (have the new chain ready and waiting). The rear mech is Shimano Deore XT and the current cassette is a Shimano XT (11-34).
It seems I have (at least) a couple of choices... Another XT cassette or an LX cassette (maybe SRAM also?). We're not weight weenies, and I was just wondering if the LX cassette might be a bit more rugged for use on a tandem? All the blurb I see about the XT seems to go to great pains to say how light (and drilled out) it is - not something we're particularly interested in - we'd rather have something that can take a bit of hammer. If I've learnt anything in the last few months it's that tandems are pretty hard on components, particularly when they're ridden in hilly areas like ours (the English Lake District).

Yup, LX is stronger - the big XT sprockets can fold if you're careless and pushing really hard (MTB tandemming). It's what we use. (although I think when I bought it the 11-34 was labelled nexave.
Dunno about the resistance of either of them to wear though, which I suspect is what you're more concerned with.

Could you give more details on the circumstances? This is the first I've heard of such things happening. How much do you weigh, the height of the jump, which bike was it... etc. -- Phil, Squid-in-Training

I've managed to fold a granny ring on a touring tandem trying to climb a short sharp hill fully loaded in Switzerland. A local farmer wielded his angle grinder perilously close to the frame to cut it away from the bike as it folded between the boom tube and stoker seat tube and jammed the pedals.

Not the carrier!
The inner bits - the spider sections - folded, in the way you'd expect if you took the outer and gave it a big pull sideways holding on at a section half way between the spider legs. Which also mean the outer bits folded as well.
It isn't that close to the outer radius for the 34t sprocket.
