OT: Anti-trojan software

Just a note to remind everyone to run your software on a regular basis. Last night there was a trojan on my computer caught -- never installed, but in a temporary file. It indicated: Severe. Keep 'em running. I saw it as I was up at 2 am, which is usually when it runs. Then DH got on it this a.m., because he is the expert that keeps my computer humming. Dee Dee

Just a note to remind everyone to run your software on a regular basis.

Running it is important but so is keeping the anti-virus signatures
up-to-date on a regular basis - daily is best.

Nah, I've had a couple of nasty viruses when I was a kid and computers were
not even invented yet. Made me damned sick.
Other systems are also open to viruses, but since MS Windows is the major
(dominant) operating system and a lot of people are jealous of Bill Gates,
they put there twisted efforts into trying to bring the system down. If
another system overtakes MS, the orgasm seeking geeks will go after that
one.

The first malware to appear were all unix based. No, not windows.
Unix and it's variants are the basis for what we know as the
internet, and they were hit first. See "Morris worm".
Security problems won't disappear if (when) windows bites
the dust.

Only if you use Mac OS X, at least for now. If you use something like
Linux, you can get a virus, but the number of Linux based malware
programs are very small. As a result, even if you run Linux your odds of
getting a virus drop considerably.

That's good advice!
I do mine a little bit different.
i simply refuse to click on a file from an unknown source
if I have a file from an unknown source, I use this
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
it's a web based virus scan from bitdefender
I like it because I can scan one file or the whole drive
otherwise, if I have to visit a questionable site! I switch over to my
Limited Account
(control panel, users, create account, "limited"😉 a limited account
under XP
just means that user cannot install anything. So let the tempest rage
inside the TIF folder...)
For general web browsing, if you are logged in as Limited User, you are
safe to surf anywhere without fear of spyware, adware, etc...viruses...
I have had zero viruses and or spy and adware using this method.
This way, I don't have to take up PC memory with a virus protection
software
Realtime virus protection software scans everything, written to your
drive
(it slows everything down)...

That's a good thing! But browswers like firefox let you defend against web
downloads. And turning off Java (NOT javascript) is also a good idea unless
you need it for specific web apps. Also with fast connections, you can zero
your browser cache (or I.E. insists on 1 Mb.). That's a few of my
strategies, anyway.
Old saying: If your computer had eyes, you'd look like a statue!
