Ah, yes, so that's yours! Very nice, though I'm really looking to do
it all by bike, from NYC. Some of these places I'm not sure how I
would get to (the starting point, I mean) by bicycle.

there a way to "shadow" Highway 9S into NYC??? Made it to the Bear Mt.
Bridge all right, but on the other side someone forgot all about the
bicyclists!

Or I'm riding along Coney Island's Boardwalk...into the
Rocakways...into Atlantic Village...but then, that's it! The only way
to continue onto the islip with Jones Beach -- and Robert Moses State
Park beyond, my real destination -- is this "Loop" highway...damn it!

Would some kind of GPS unit be helpful? I need to know what the
streets are, where I can ride. Yes it's fun to drive but nothing beats
cycling. I'd rather get there cycling.

Why not get a copy of MS Streets and Trips. It will have the layout of the
city and you can zoom in a see the roads. Then plan your ride ahead of
time. You can also get it on a PDA with GPS, though I've not done that.

Heh heh...actually, I've always thought of death as following in my
trail! F'r instance, I was the guy out there in at six post meridian
last November heading towards Bear Mt. on 9W without a light....

Thanks for the tip, Roger -- I don't know PDAs and GPSes beyond what
they stand for as acronyms (not a luddite, but still have yet to look
into pre-paid cellphones for possible emergencies on the road!), and
especially as they relate to cycling....

There are ways to get to many of them by bike, or at least by rail. Find
one that you are interested in and I'm sure either I or someone else on this
group can get you there without a car!

How to get to Robert Moses State Park from the Ringelmann Walk in Coney
Island?

Or from the Bear Mountain Bridge back down to New York City on the east
side of the Hudson?

Or Newark from Bayonne?

And what's the status of the Goethals Bridge repair with respect to the
pedestrian walkway?

You can't bike to Robert Moses. The parkways on the south shore of Long
Island - Loop, Meadowbrook, Robert Moses and Ocean, are off-limits to
bikes. Excepting the bike path along the Wantagh Parkway from Cedar Creek
County Park to the Jones Beach Thearer - but that gets you only as far as
the boardwalk.

You can get to Long Beach, NY from Coney Island via: Emmons Ave. / Bike Path
to Flatbush / Marine Parkway Bridge / Rockaway Beach Blvd / Shore Front
Parkway / Empire Blvd. / Seagirt / Atlantic Beach Bridge to LB.

From LB, you can head north into Nassau County. From there, there's

Much of this can be Googled. Try TransAlt as a good starting point for
links to the assorted bike clubs in NJ, Westchester and LI, most of whom

I wrote Shuttle Bike and just thought I should share the info:

Its pontoons got upgraded to double-chamber pontoons (so -- God forbid!
-- a puncture in the front of one doesn't lead to total leakage and
collapse), and it's available until the end of this month for
US$890.00, freight inclusive!

Unfortunately, they seem like they only do wire transfers and
PayPal....

Robert Moses State Parks elsewhere!! And yes, I typed "nyc," "bike,"
