  1. Remember the Kenyan cyclists who were over for the Commonwealth Games and trained on the hard
shoulder of the motorway? Well on the way to work along the M8 this morning I saw someone who'd
obviously decided to have a go at this motorway cycling too. This was just after J2 on the M8, after
    it crosses the River Almond.

He seemed to be kitted out like a "normal" cyclist, i.e. he didn't look like some daftie who didn't
have a clue. I didn't get much of a look at his face in the mirror (well you don't at 70 mph do
you?), but he looked fairly old from what I saw, so this may have partly explained why he was there.
He was making fairly decent progress though!

I pulled in at the next emergency phone and the police said they already had a car on the way. I
think they called it a tacho-car, so maybe they wanted to get him for speeding ;-) I didn't ring to
get him nicked, I just felt that he'd be safer if he was given a lift somewhere less motorway-like.

  2. I may have mentioned this before, but about 15 years ago I spotted a roadie barrelling up the
northbound M5 just south of Brum. The presence of a slow-moving Belgian-registered camper van close
behind suggests that he may have been a Bemused Foreigner...

  3. What needs to be remembered is in Africa, often there is only 1 road between locations that carries
    _all_ traffic.

Maybe this chap was training for a "fast course" time trial ?

No, the speed limit only applies to motor vehicles...

Don't know what the situation is up here, but Dahn Sahff they still have a statute on the books for
`furious pedalling'---a guy was nicked for it for doing over 30mph in a built-up area in my home
    town once.

With regard to the earlier thread about the nicked cyclist: it happened to me a couple of years
ago---ran a red light (pedestrian crossing) on my bike. Got pulled over. GBP 20 spot fine and a
    stern talking to.

On my then-flatmate's advice I wrote on the back of the cheque "If you cash this you will be cursed
for all eternity", which, some of you may not be surprised to note, does not act as an effective
    method of keeping one's money.
