I got to thinking about the top of Helevellyn many yars ago. I seem to remember that, at about the point where the Lower Man path branches off there used to be an iron gate just stuck there on its own. No fence, just the gate. I also seem to think that there was some form of sign on it advertising milk, or a dairy.
Is my memory going completely, or can anyone else remember such a thing? it's not there now of course.

I've looked through my Wainwright (it's about 30 years old) for both Helvellyn and Lower Man and cannot find a reference to it. I do remember there is a solitary gate somewhere he mentions, but not where it was.

I recall seeing an iron gate post on its own up on Helvellyn last year on the URW expedition. Not sure if it's the one you mean or if my memory is going!

I am sure I have seen several solitary gates in the ELD over the years but can't recall where.
As to a gate post I don't remember that but Memorymap actually has one marked on the flank of Dollywaggon Pike at NY 34583 12820. I didn't see it myself but I was following the crest of the ridge rather than the motorway at that time.

I have passed a few gates with no accompanying fences or walls over the years - and always delight in trying to close them to stop animals straying through them.
I was walking on a huge grouse moor last weekend - it was surrounded by miles of electrified fencing - and then there were a number of places, mainly where the fence was crossing a stream, where it would be quite easy for a sheep, if not a cow, to enter underneath.
