Since my problem seemed to be connecting with this particular news group I
felt it was appropriate to test here."Michael Press" <[email hidden]> wrote in message

Off topic; contrary to terms of service. Post to
misc.test. Tell your friends.Do not top post. First post to misc.test. If a news server
fails to propagate your article, it will fail to propagate
it to any news group. You did not post first to a *.test
news group, did you?--

There is a newsgroup specifically for this purpose called "test". All
you need do is add it to the newsgroups you want to monitor.Jobst Brandt

In the first place, get over yourself. In the second place, My problem *was*
difficulty posting messages and replies to THIS particular group. I included
an apology in the original post. If that's not good enough for you, then
you're probably a jerk.

Press IS correct about your top-posting: it's a PITA. (See how I just
deleted all the other stuff rather than go to the trouble of rearranging it
all?)Give it (posting your reply UNDER the text you're addressing) a shot; you'll
never go back.Bill "testing, testing" S.

In the interest of respecting the good folks of this NG, I'll try to
remember not to top post, but please tell me--
What's the big deal? Who made this silly rule, and what stick was lodged up
his or her backside when he or she came up with it?Just curious

First, thanks. Second, when a thread gets "involved", it's much easier to
follow if people adhere to generally accepted posting conventions. (Sounds
better than rules? I'm sure there's a FAQ about this, too.) Also helps if
people bother to TRIM excess stuff, as often you'll see like 12 KBs of text
and scroll down just to find a one-line comment or something. The idea is to give a NEW READER some idea of what the heck you're talking
about. If they just see something like "That's what I thought, too" with a
whole bunch of quoted stuff below it, how do they know WHAT you're agreeing
with? (Especially if some people in the thread top-posted while most
didn't! That throws /everything/ off.)Check out a little program called "Quotefix" for OE. You can set it to
place the cursor at the bottom automatically; I chose not to, since I like
to scroll down and answer point by point (deleting old stuff along way) --
but it also does some neat stuff like "color code" reply trees so it's much
easier to spot new text, AND give life to little emoticon thingies by
animating 'em. (Thus 8-O becomes a purple flashy guy and not just an 8 and
an 'O'.)What was the question?

What's the big deal? Who made this silly rule, and what stick was lodged up
his or her backside when he or she came up with it?It is the convention used here. I would rather top post as I do on my
email messages. If the reader needs details, they can read below.
BUT, I no longer top post here.
