Whaddaya suppose is going on? I put about 1-1/2 tbsp butter in a glass measuring cup. I added about 1 tbsp freshly chopped onion. I put the cup in the microwave to melt the butter and cook the onions a bit. I turned on the power - full power. Sparks flew. Seriously. I think I'll try it again (on purpose) and have my camera at the ready.
You can do this with green peppers (I think without the butter), too.

Are you saying this has been happening ever since you had this particular MW oven, or is it a new development?

You can also make sparks in your mouth by chomping down on a wintergreen Lifesaver, but I digress.

I cook onions and peppers in my nuker routinely and have never seen sparks. Where do they fly from? To?

This happens to me when I use mushrooms in the microwave (replacing your onions). I'm not sure why it happens. I have not tried the onions. Actual sparks and not just exploding onions... Hmmm... The only thing I can possibly think of is your cup had some type of metal or maybe (showing my stupidity here) lead in it?

i've seen this happen before in my kitchen. i figured it was metallic material in the paint/markings on the cooking vessel. do you regularly put that vessel in the nuker?

Nope. It has to do with the contents. When I first had the experience with green peppers here, I talked to Lynne Rosetto Kasper (The Splendid Table on NPR) and she put it to her food scientist-wizard-person Shirley Corriher (sp?). She came up blank -- and my question wasn't used on the air because she didn't know the answer. Maybe I need a physicist instead of a food scientist ‹ I think I'll ask Chris.

Pastorio
They were just sitting there in the pyrex cup with the butter pat. I only let them at it for maybe 5-10 seconds (out of curiosity). Didn't appear to be flying out of the container stayed inside. Their were bits of black on some of the onions, though. I gotta try to replicate this with camera in hand. -- http://www.jamlady.eboard.com, updated 1-15-2006, RIP Connie Drew

The psychiatrist I already have and I still have the issue with the mushrooms. I wonder if it is the chemical content of some veggies. I've got lead on the brain these days, as in crystal.

Nope, this was an only-time occurrence (with the onions) this morning when I was making some onions & butter for my luncheon pirohy. Personally I think Barb's microwave, and mine, just plain old hate us. I've got a spare in the basement so if this one craps out on me, or threatens to, I'll replace it's rotating self in a second.
