My winter bike page

Nice stuff--I totally agree with the Nexus thumbie being far superior
to the grip [censored].

The lack of cable housing is brilliant--but in my arctic Chicago
riding--I never had the shifter cable seize, but the brake cables were
notorious for locking up from moisture when it was below 15F or so.
Wierd--or it may just be that it was easier for water to seep into the
brake levers compared to the shifter. :P

Love the wicked chainguard but your milk crate has to go--if you were
in the SE, I'd hand deliver one of my elegant all metal models to
ya--but at least scrap the teal for the love of Don Johnson! ;-)

Nice bike. I'm a bit of a wuss I guess. I bike in the cold but prefer
not to ride in snow and slush. That's because I'm doing it in NYC and
it's just plain dangerous to be biking near cars when a slip could put
me under their wheels. And they always push the snow onto the sides of
the road which is usually where I am.

Come to think of it, we haven't had much snow yet this year. It's
already mid January and tomorrow is supposed to be near 60F. That
hardly counts as cold weather biking. Hurray for global warming.

You chain looks like it needs some TLC, though. Your rear derailer will
also last longer if you put a grunge guard on it. The accumulated salty
slush can destroy the pivots within a single season.

I think I had a rear brake freeze up once, but blamed that on the full
run of housing, so that's when I started uisng as little of that as
possible. I've never had the front freeze.

But I had lots of trouble with the old bike's 1st generation Rapdifire
getting stuck, so they got replaced with thumbs. But the rear derailer
would get gunked up and often not work, so that's when I started
exploring the internal-gear hubs. I'd even just go single-speed if I
didn't need to tow a trailer every now and then.

Thanks, and yes, the chain looks sad, and I was waiting for someone to
mention it. ;o) But it was just surface rust, and a good wipe with a
rag and some oil and its fine. With a winter bike I just keep the
chain lubed, and then in the Spring when cleaning up for storage I see
if there's any life left for the next season.

But I'm not sure where you're seeing a derailer on my bike...

Yeah, a fixed gear (with studs) is the ultimate winter bike, no shifters
to fail, can use leg braking if all else fails.

That's been my sentiment lately too. But, come summer, I wonder if

winter bike, but my hybrid, briefly returing to its former incarnation
for trailer towing, since the winter bike was awaiting its new 7-speed
wheel.

As for the politicians, Parliament Hill is about 1km from my house, and
I cycle past there quite often. It's a whole 'nuther world...

How about we have a referendum, that the next Prime Minister's official
limosine have two wheels and be operator powered.... If it's Paul
Martin, I don't think he would last long though, he's getting a little
elderly for office.....

Yeah yeah, read my reply about that further back. And to add to it:
the photo was takennot long after installation of the new wheel, and I
had let the chain dry out so as not have to deal with all the muck. A
scrub and some oil and it's fine now, really!

I cycled through Alberta last summer; it didn't escape my notice that
whenever the inevitable question of my origin was broached and the
answer 'Toronto' imparted, a grimace would briefly transform the
otherwise welcoming expression of the questioner. This reaction
provoked by the T-word was duly noted; my home was moved to Winnipeg;
thereafter the locals were spared the anxiety of confronting their
nemesis.
