Beacons Campsite

Try the Pencelli site. very nice toio;et/shower block and a pub just
down the road. Well manicured camp site.

We had an Expedtiion here a couple of years ago - someone may have a

I can certainly vouch for the Pencelli site. I have stayed there a number
of times and always found it well tended, clean and well managed. A quiet
family site rather than an all night party site. Excellent showers / loos.
Some nice views too.

Its only about four miles or so from Brecon too (although Brecon can often
seem as though it is shut this time of year!).

And you can walk up to Pen-y-Fan from there (not the best route, nor the
worst - did someone day Storey Arms?).

Cheers to all. I know that site and the pub near it. I was hoping for
something a little quieter. Think I may have to sacrifice the shower,
though. ;-(

You want quiet on top of all that? Oh hang on though, you say 'this
time of year'. How about Pencelli Castle?

I'd imagine it's anything but quiet in the middle of summer, but if
you're thinking of going round about now it'd be ideal. The ablutions
block is superb and it's within easy walk of a pub - but be warned the
pub isn't cheap. It was, however, convenient, and the food was good -
but that was at the tail end of 2001(?) and things may have changed in
the interim.

The pub may only do evening meals at weekends. When Anne and I met
Judith one Tuesday evening in November 2004, there was no food
available. A bit oi a bummer after travelling about 40 miles for a nosh
!

Oh dear. My memory is that although it wasn't the cheapest place in the
world the food was eminently edible and the mugs of hot chocolate were
rather good as well.

Good summer advice. Poor winter advice IMHO'cos a warm shower and a pub
lunch will make the dark hours between 4.45pm and bedtime pass much
quicker!

All a matter of personal preference. I actually prefer winter camping.
More peace and quiet (especially in busier areas where I'd never camp in
summer), no insects, camp fire under the stars (when practical), long lie-in
in the morning... ;-)

Who says I want them to pass quickly? I rather enjoy the comfort and safety
of the tent when the elements are raging outside. I generally go to sleep
by 7pm when winter camping anyway.

I most certainly do - too much of it most of the time! They didn't have
a vegetarian meal available (I think they'd run out or something) so
they found me a huge plate of spuds and veggies that found their way
down to my very appreciative tummytumtum. Very nice it were.

they weren't "doing" meals, but the waitress passed us several times
with meals for a party in the lounge. No food indeed !!!

Special bookings are just that though, 'special'. The party may have
booked the lounge and paid extra for the waitress etc.

Seeing as we were only three remotely likely to require food, they
could have stretched a point - business is business. Their approach was
not conducive to repeat visits like ours.

Pencelli in November is definitely NOT the centre of the world
attracting hosts of travellers.
