kind of obvious really but it didn't occur to me for ages. They don't perform well in the cold so
they won't charge well either.

you just need to increase the charge voltage.you really need to say what sort of batteries you are talking about. but most types of battery don't
like heat or being stored discharged. some even like being stored in the fridge. lead acid
especially batteries should be charged as soon as possible
