  1. Now that I am changing my chain cassette what is the best choice for a
10 speed, I have for the last few years used a 12/25 9 speed ?

I'm currently using a Chorus set-up on my summer bike which I haven't ridden
yet, but I have been very impressed with the bike my insurance company gave
me - a Trek 1400 which has the 06 Shimano 105 10 speed groupset. Very nice
indeed, lovely shifting from the gear levers, just a small tap on the inner
lever is all it takes to shift up a gear. Don't know how much this is down
    to the cassette itself though.

I'm using 14-23 straight through (aka close ratio), with 30/42/53
    rings.

Depends how strong and fit you are. Only you can decide.

  5. It depends what sort of rides you are planning to do and how fit you
are. I presume you are using standard 39-52 or 39-53 front chainrings.

Looking on Parker's website, Campag Chorus 10 cassettes are available
    11-23, 12-25, 13-26 & 13-29. Ultegra 10 speed are 11-23, 12-23, 12-25,
    12-27, 13-25 & 14-25.

    Unless you are Robbie McEwen
(http://www.procycling.com/news.aspx?ID=1840), an 11T cog will get used
about twice a year and (even then only on a nice long downhill).
Likewise, there isn't much in the UK you can't climb in 39x23 or 25
unless you are not so fit. But if you're used to having a 12T, you
will miss it if you go for 13 or 14 as your 'top' gear.

If you are planning to ride any mountain passes abroad, a 29T bottom
cog will be handy, but won't be that useful for UK rides.

If you've been happy with 12/25 9-speed, I'd stick with that or
possibly go for 12/27 to give you more options when climbing. You'll
have a bonus of having an extra gear in the middle, probably around 16T
    (ie 12-13-14-15-17-19-21-23-25 becomes 12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23-25)
which can often come in handy as it cuts down on the jump between the
    15 and 17.

  6. It depends on how fit you are and what type of rides you are doing /
    planning.

Presuming you are using standard 39/52 or 39/53 chainrings, there isn't
much in the UK you can climb in 39x23 or 25 - unless you are not so fit
or the climb comes at the end of a long ride. However, French cols are
a different beast and a 29T would be handy, even if you hardly use it
    when riding at home.

If you are happy with 12/25, I'd stick that or perhaps 12/27. With
12/25, you will get an extra gear (16T?) in the middle which cuts down
on the jump between 15T and 17T (ie 12-13-14-15-17-19-21-23-25 becomes
    12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23-25).

Actually there's plenty in the UK that I can't climb on 39x23 and I
am fit. Most of the Lakes comes to mind. More locally to me there's
plenty of 1:4s that are long enough to make 39x23 very painful even
    in summer.

Are you happy with the range? If so, why not 12/25 10 speed?

Granted, I haven't done much riding in the lakes.

I tend to use 39/52 chainrings and 12-23 9-speed cassette most of the
time for flat(ish) Bedfordshire, but swap for a 52-42-30 triple front
when riding longer / harder routes. I wouldn't have finished the
Autumn Epic Cyclosportif in October 05 were it not for my trusty little
30T - and I'd spent the whole Summer racing and completed the End to
    End!

Just goes to show, you can never have a low enough bail-out gear!

I had one of those moments this morning. I ended up behind an
articulated tanker at a roundabout, with a long gentle downhill ahead
and a 50mph limit (and, strictly, 40mph for the HGV...).

    Slipstream time!

Unfortunately, 52x13 top gear and early morning legs meant I was limited
to 42mph, and the tanker got away. Good fun whilst it lasted, though!

Thanks again for all your comments guys

Absolutely. I have a medium cage rear derailleur specifically so I can
fit a 13/29 cassette if so minded. I never have yet, but Tynron Brae
    <URL:http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=278395&y=591310&z=3>
nearly killed me. And that was when I was fit.
