  1. It's easy to read RBT from anywhere through google groups or
    similar services.
For a friend with a hotmail account but no personal machine
    how can he participate here?

  2. I see lots of Gmail.com and yahoo.com accounts. How would hotmail.com
    be any different?

  3. I'm writing this reply from Google groups, so why couldn't he do the
    same?

  4. Yarr, I use Google Groups as well, and though I miss the fancy
filtering, threading, and plonking of my standalone news client, GG is
so much more convenient 90% of the time. I dual boot Linux/XP so it's
nice to have Usenet be seamless across OS's along with the fabulous
    Gmail.*

AFAIK, you only need a Google account to access GG, but Gmail is
wonderfully nimble and elegant compared to Hotmail, so the switch is
    wholly worth it. 😄

*want an account? I've got invites for everybody. Just zap me an email.

Yes, when he's reading it he can reply to messages or start new posts.
The first time, he'll have to sign up for a Google account. And he'll
have to sign-in each time he's on a diff computer to write to the
    group.

  6. The most important thing about Google Groups or Hotmail, or any web
based service when on a public computer is the signing out part. Make
sure to delete the "personal information" and cookies that the browser
has gathered--it differs slightly depending on browser, but is usually
doable under "preferences". Some places put their 'puters into "kiosk"
mode, but it's pretty rare. This means that the web browser can be set
up to delete all personal info each time it gets closed. Firefox and
Opera are capable of this and most like IE as well.

How does he get access to Hotmail? Unless he's reading his mail via
his cell phone or PDA, there has to be a terminal of some sort
involved. If he is getting his mail via a small-screen/small-pipe
method, then the newsgroup will overwhelm the interface in any event.
(Consider trying to read the bar-end shifters thread that way.) In
that case, his local public library (most now have public Internet
access, sometimes filtered) may be the answer.

Gmail is a security risk. It's a nicely crafted Ajax application, to
be sure, but leaving your e-mail in the hands of someone else stikes
me as asking to have security troubles. Already the U.S government is
trying to get access to the Google search records.

Sounds paranoid, I know, but the centralization of internet
information at Google means they are a huge target and will come under
pressure from government and malware. The best protection of internet
    freedom is decentralization of information.

gmail isn't all that bad. I've started using it to receive all my mail
from Performance, Nashbar, etc. You can even set up separate files
(forget what gmail calls it) for each vendor. I think it's kind of like
using PGP for all your mail -- it'll chew CPU cycles at NSA when they
    get around to snooping it.

Oh, if you want to write me a personal note, I'll send you my personal
    email address.

Seems you can send and read mail but there isn't a
'newsgroups' function there directly, nor at msn.com's
    webmail I'm told.

When on someone else's machine I can read through Google
Groups but never was able to reply from there myself. Is
    that possible?

I'll suggest he look harder there, thanks.
