  1. Hi everyone,
I asked for suggestions as to what to bring my French friend when I go
visit. After calling the airlines and spending a good hour being read
the fine print as to what is permissible (boy the French are strict) we
could not find out if I can bring in locally grown dates, so I'm going
to do it anyway along with another locally grown nut-pistachios and if
it gets tossed then so be it. I also thought I'd bring chocolate chips
so she can make cookies for her 4 kids. They have a standard recipe on
the bag but what about translating to metric, I suppose she can look it
up online? Please forgive me but I'm not much of a cook/baker (to put
it kindly) will this be a problem?
    TIA

My guess is that the bags of chocolate chips they sell in France have
the same recipe with metric quantities. In any case, conversions are
certainly easy to find. There are some in the FAQs for this group, for
    example. -aem

  3. Google can help here.
    www.google.com
    Search on :
    3 oz in grams
    and google returns :
    3 ounces = 85.0485694 grams

A cup is roughly 250 ml
    1 Tsp is 5 ml
    1Tbsp is 15 ml

You can bring the dates but know that the French can get superb dates
from any of their former colonies.

Do her kids like chocolate chip cookies? Don't try to convert the
recipe to metric. She can look up a French recipe for chocolate chip
    cookies and work from there.

The spineless two faced frogs get plenty pistachios from iran. And
europe has chocolate running out the kazoos.

I'd bring real maple syrup, wonderful cashews from zenobia.com, a big
ole jug of Jack Daniels, and speaking of jugs snuggle a pair of
    avocados in your bra.

Do they sell bags of chocolate chips in France? Here in the Netherlands they
    do not.

Excellent idea. Maple syrup is available here on the continent, but only for
high prices for small amounts of rather second-rate stuff.

We do get very nice cashews here from Spain and Israel.

    Jack Daniels,

    Plenty of that here already.

There's nothing wrong with the avocados we get here from South Africa,
    Israel, Spain, and Morocco.

Let's see, what would be a good thing to bring.... Extra-sharp cheddar
cheese. There's plenty of English cheddar around, and it's really great
stuff, but the American is different and equally great stuff, and there's
nothing here that really compared to the extra-sharp varieties.

I'm surprised to hear that. Here in the US the most popular brand has
always been Nestle's, which sells all over the world. Probably a
question of what each market wants? -aem
