  1. It seems that we cyclists come up with some pretty imaginative ways to crash. I've hit the rear wheel of another bike and gone down, and hit the back of a parked car and gone (over and) down. (Don't ask.) But anybody can do that. Now about six months ago I was minding my own business on an easy ride (I do this once in a while just to break up the association of bike = pain) and a raccoon darted out of tall grass and into my front wheel. I had no chance. The raccoon moved on from the interruption, and I didn't. Result: bloody abrasions all over, and a pulled groin muscle so severe I was on crutches for three weeks and in screaming pain (literally) whenever I moved just wrong.

I'm interested in hearing about the efforts of other creative types out there.

  2. My husband managed to be hit by a flying bicycle during a crit last year.

Someone else came off- never did figure out what happened to him, but it looked like he jammed his chain or something and he went off either flipping entirely over or off the back (he ended up sitting on the ground looking a bit dazed) and the bike proceeded to bounce end over end down the race course. My husband saw it coming out of the corner of his eye (it was catching up to him from behind!) put his arm out to block the thing and got hit squarely on the wrist by the top tube of the other bike. He was lucky enough to not go over himself, but about 2 laps from the finish he decided to quit and get an ice pack because his wrist was really swelling up.

    How's that for bizarre!

  3. getting hit by a bike sux, hands down sux.

this one wasnt on the pushy but on my old motorbike, yamaha tz250, was racing at philip island here in aus, the back straight is 5th gear pinned left hander where your knees on the ground and well its just farkn fast 220kph'ish.
going that fast your looking a fair way ahead, as you get there quick haha. out of the left side of my vision i saw a white blur, front end of bike folds hardcore and knee goes into overtime keeping it up. luckly i held it up and entered the pits. my bike and leathers were bright yellow.................. splattered with red and feathers, a seagull went though the front wheel somewhere around 200ish kph and exploded. man, what a mess🙄

my team keep saying they would call the rspca for animal cruelty (local wild life crew) if i didnt get pole. hahah [censored]

  4. I was cycling through a town with two other guys in front of me and a [censored] guy wandered out into the road in front of us, result pileup!

  5. Nobody went down but this is still a good story. I was on a local training ride, "The Simi Ride" to all you Los Angeles area riders out there. Anyway, I was about 10 or 15 back in a line descending a pretty fast hill, when a herd of deer decided to cross the road ahead of us. Thought for sure we'd all go down. The first couple of deer ran across the road with no problem but the last two jumped over the first two guys in the pace line. When we all got to the bottom of the hill we just broke out laughing.

They were probably drafting and didn't want to let a gap open.😄

  7. Spring - 2005:

Earlier in the day I planted a skinny little 6' tall Liquid Amber tree to the side of our driveway, cute little tree, a gift from my wife’s Sister.

I just finished putting a front wheel on my wife’s vintage Nishiki 10 speed, a bike that her father gave her some years ago, she loves her late father so the bike means a great deal to her. All clean, waxed and shiny, I took it for a spin down the driveway and back. The bike is amazing, it has always felt very solid and smooth, every once of power goes to the back wheel...humm... Well anyway, my wife saw me riding her bike and wanted to take it for a spin, so I adjusted the saddle for her and off she went. She would go all the way down the drive (300'😉 and on to the lawn and make a big turn around the Aspen tree and then backup the drive, all the time making right turns. This time she decides to go the opposite way and make a big left turn around the Aspen tree with a little more speed. She was doing fine until she came a little too close the fence and she started to panic, then as if the bike had a mind of it's own, the bike started tracking the little Amber tree I planted earlier, tracking, tracking, her feet come off the pedals like landing gear on a 727, tracking, tracking, 10 yards, 5 yards..... Boom. One hand on the handlebars the other wrapped around the amber tree. She finally let go of the bike and it rolled and toppled softly in the grass a few feet away. There she was, flat on her butt with the Amber tree branch bent and tucked in her armpit with another branch with leaves covering half of her face. A face that was laughing so hard she could hardly catch her breath. She finally let go of the tree and it flipped straight up like a catapult launching stones at the Roman Army. She must of sat there for 10 minutes laughing, she laughed so hard that I started to laugh uncontrollably and I think our dogs were laughing too.

Now and again when she passes that Amber tree she gets a big grin on her faces and she has improved on her left turns.

Cute story. Not real bizarre, but worth a chuckle.

I know.... A nice little Endo over the Amber tree would have added a little more to the story. 😄

  10. Not a road bike story, but a bmx bike story:

I was out at some trail a friend and I had built and was just having a nice session, flowing through the jumps. I get over the last jump in the set, and after that jump theres bout 25 feet and then a big tree in the middle of the path, well I landed and was going roughly 20-22mph when I pulled my brake lever. SNAP went the cable. Uh-oh... Ran straight into the tree at 20mph, I had taken my feet off to try and slow myself down by jamming them into the ground, so when the bike hit the tree, it bounced up and nailed the family jewels, pushing me forward, face first into the tree. All the while my friend is watching me and laughing hysterically.

  11. Riding along a city street (eastern ave in Toronto, Canada) there was a puddle in front of me. I was going about 40 km/hr. I didn't know there was a BIG pothole in that puddle, I went through the puddle, hit the pothole, I launched over the handlebars, but kept my hands on the handlebars, somehow I landed on my back and slid for about 10 meters before stopping, and the bike upright and behind me, with me facing the bike. I got off with just a few minor scrapes on my back ( I was wearing a t-shirt). That was one of my better landings.
I've avoided eastern ave after that incident, the thing was (and probably still is) full of potholes and cracks and fissures.

  12. Last fall, I was riding... not paying attention... there was no traffic...no houses... but trees everywhere. There was this psycho squirrel. It came out of no where and went through my front wheel. The squirrel flew away and it damaged my spokes. But… didn’t crash. They are crazy…

    1) Grade 11, I think... I decided to try and ride my bike out of the bike rack (the old style cement ones). I didn't quite make it and ended up falling on the next bike over destroying its wheel.

    2) Same year... the school was on a hill next to a highway. 3 of were riding down the hill at 40-50 km/h and the light goes yellow so I nail the brakes a bit late and the guy behind me spears me and goes over the bars, over me and lands in the highway (no cars coming). Ah good times... 20 years later I was a groomsman and the MC at his wedding 😄.

    3) I'm in a left turn lane and the grey hair ahead of me is waiting for a jumbo-jet sized gap before turning. He/she finally makes the turn just as the light changes... I'm [censored] and determined to not be held up by the light so I gun it and am unleashing an adrenaline-fueled sprint that would make a track racer proud. At that moment my freehub fails, sending me over the bars. There were bits of me and bike everywhere strewn across four lanes. 😄

  14. Saw this on the internet and thought it was one of the better bizarre crashes. Guy was lucky not to get hurt.😉 http://ebaumsworld.com/2006/01/bikecrash.html
