At the present time there is very little snow lying on the mountains of
Scotland, even the higher tops of the Cairngorms have lost a lot of
snow during the last week. From forecasts I have checked the
forthcoming week is expected to be mild so at the present moment winter
skills will be difficult to practice. However in saying that there
was a lot of ice high up on Saturday after Friday's rain and a sudden
drop in temperature on Friday night.

I think you will have to wait a few weeks and see if ther is some snow
fall.

'Gorms are good for winter conditions, having snow and ice when plenty
of other places are blank, but I wouldn't say "easy", especially
compared to, say, Carn Aosda at Glenshee, if there's snow there.

I was east of Bynack More on Sunday and there is very little snow on
the Gorms, with lots of bare patches even above 4000 feet. I spoke to
a guy who was on Bynack More and the main problem was ice.

I was on the plateau on Saturday, walking from Coire Cas to Ben MacDui
and there was continuous ice or thin old hard snow. Crampons were
essential above 750 metres. However the snow is only an inch or so deep
in most places and there are plenty of icy rocks. My crampons needed
sharpening by the end of the day.

Despite the mild weather forecast today saw a dusting of snow on the
Cromdale Hills. Bynack More looks a bit whiter too.

Thanks everyone for your help, been checking out the weather,
definitely not hopeful for this weekend, maybe next eh...?
