Wow! I never really looked at it this way before. I, for one, am grateful to
Rob for opening my eyes to the truth. With one incisive stroke he's cut
through Frank and Guy's doubletalk. It's a good thing someone had the
courage to do so! His logic is unassailable. Thank you, thank you, thank
you. I will never ride without a helmet again.

too much. Anyway, I thought I'd bless you all with my wisdom for
old times sake.

Wear your damn helmets. I work in the ER of a trauma center and I
hate to see people's families cry when doctors tell them their
loved one is dead or a vegetable because he/she didn't wear a
helmet. This goes double for you "cool" Harley riders, too.

I'm talking about IN TRAFFIC, mainly. If your putting around in
your driveway where there is little risk of injury, use your
head.

In that case, I admonish you to drive safely. Bicycle helmets
do not absolve you of that responsibility, although I'm sure
that's the main reason for the promotion of helmets -- to
dumb-down driving, for the convenience of drivers.

Try not to hit any cyclists.

This reminds of a discussion on a bike path last winter. I was on a 50
km ride in about -10 C, only wearing a wool hat. Another rider, who
introduced him as a head trauma specialist gave me a lecture pretty much
like yours above. The guy ran every red light on the way, so I would
always pass him between the lights, and stop at the red lights which he
could ignore safely because he was wearing a helmet.

riders and how many are helmetless bicycle riders?

There may also be quite a few helmetless car and truck riders as well
as pedestrians.

A helmet is no substitute for riding safely, just a part of
riding safely. Just because this guy is a doctor doesn't mean he
has common sense. Here's a little riddle for you:

Q: What do you call the guy who graduates LAST in his class in
medical school?

A: Doctor.

Isn't that scary? And someone has a 9 AM appointment with him on
Monday. Now THAT's scary!

No one says you can't walk around with your helmet on! Look at
Special Ed from Crank Yankers. Now as far as helmetless drivers
go, are there any professional motor sports that will let you
race without a helmet, and a 5 way harness for cars?

Sorry I don't have time to compile data from trauma centers to
make some statistics for you. You can probably Gooogle it,
though.

Helmets don't prevent accidents. Careful riding can prevent alot
of accidents but not all of them. If you do have an accident,
proper helmet use can reduce the severity of injury. Not in every
case, of course. But if you know there is an easy way to reduce
the odds of becoming dead or paralyzed while still having the
same amount of fun, why wouldn't you do it? Maybe some people
like [censored] themselves and having a home health aide wipe their
asses for them. And making those who love them wonder why they
didn't just wear a simple helmet insteads of putting them through
misery. And I wouldn't bother writing all this if I didn't care
about people in general, especially my buddies, whom I never met,
here at rec.bicycles.misc.

brain angiography!

I was just looking for something like "Well, a few guys came in last
year with bicyle cloths on and had pretty severe head trauma". Or
something like that.

The fact that your first post mentioned motorcycles made me think you
were lumping those in with bicycles. I jsut wanted some clarifiation.
