Iron. Free weights, power cage or rack, bench.
Not Blowflex.
I assume your space is not extremely limited; otherwise, you would not
have purchased a treadmill.

Here's a great site about women's resistance training, and a great
article on bone building.

I'm a 41 year old woman with three kids and a business and I make time
to get to the gym, but I also have a weight bench, a swiss ball, a bunch
of dumbbells & one barbell at home. I also have resistance tubes that
work pretty well for seated rows & lat pulldowns. I've also been known
to use whatever child I can catch as a weight.
I do swiss ball squats with the dumbbells & the swiss ball
http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/ex/exercises.asp?ID=65
And sumo deadlifts
http://www.hmc.psu.edu/ufc/resources/exercise/2004/july.htm
And dumbbell shoulder presses
http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/DeltoidAnterior/DBShoulderPress.html
And bench presses. I don't do much work just for the abs. I do quite a
lot of lower body lifting despite the fact that I run or cycle several
times a week.
Here's an article on fitting in weightlifting for the short-on-time:

I have always wondered what is the purpose of this exercise. Why would
you do this and not just squat?

It's more like a sissy squat:
http://www.newyorkbarbells.com/pro93165.html
The load isn't on your upper back and you don't have balance issues or
compression on your spine or the same issues with knees going past the
toes. It's not for people pushing real weight, but it really isolates
the quads and glutes. I can get ass to grass with a ball squat and I
just can't with a barbell on my back.
Actually, I haven't done ball squats in a dog's age, I just put this up
as examples of what someone can do at home. Personally, I squat in a
power cage at the gym a couple of times a week. But I didn't want to
scare the newbie. :-)

It's a good conditioning exercise. I do it every once in awhile to switch
things up.

No time to go to the gym?
That's like saying you don't have time to brush your teeth or take a shower.
Physical Fitness is just as important.

Unless you are just going because you like looking at half naked men
<ah hem> there's no reason to go near a gym.

I use it for stretching prior to doing squats, as it makes a good lead
in for deep squats ([censored] to grass), which I find exceptionally good
for my knees.

That parts ok, but dragging it accross the carpet is in bad taste.

There's a whole different biomechanical thing going with the above apparatus
than with the swiss ball squat. Big time shear forces in the knee with the
above device - akin to leg extensions. Muy mal.

Sí. Muy, muy mal.
I would much prefer to see it done the old-fashioned way:
http://body.builder.hu/edzesek_reszletes.htm4?id=74
And that still hurts my knees.
