Even in winter i'd say only 10% of trips or less get enough water on the
road to throw up much spray. Fit mudguards and you have extra weight &
wind resistance and general rattles etc for those 90%+ dry trips when they
    serve no purpose.

Depends on locality m'lud. Here in deepest rural Norfik many a rural road is
swathed in nasties and IMO, mudguards are an essential bit of winter kit on
one's steed. If one does not have mudguards on one's steed, one very quickly
ends up looking like one has participated in the Paris-Roubaix on a wet day.

My last bike just had a mudguard attached to the down tube but had no rear
mudguard at all. The pannier rack would protect my back -- or so I thought.
But it didn't work -- in wet conditions I was splattered all up and down my
back Also there was a lot of mud thrown forward on to the seat tube and the
front derailleur mechanisms. My cycling is all based around long distance
touring -- which means in all weathers and so keeping me and my bike mud and
dirt free is important to me and my comfort!

So my new velo has full mudguards front and back with small mudflaps on the
front -- they might not survive long. I shall also be interested to see how
the mudguards themselves survive on a long touring trip. I shall have to
wait until mid May to find out on my trip down the Rhein to Rotterdam.

Full mudguards front & rear on Gino and also on Mr N Frosty (Norbert to his
friends). Nathan is using Nortbert this very day as the lanes are full of
crud and being a lazy tyke, he did not clean his own tourer last time he
used it and resultant crud has become concrete on rear cogs... to wit his
cry this morning was "Mum, I can't change gear."

Of course, it could have been a cunning plan on the part of said offspring
to be out on Norbert once more.

    Cheers, helen s
