Record Ergo Problems

Something is fouling the thumb button, not allowing it to come all the way up, causing the
jamming..Tape under the lever somewhere around the thumb button mech/teeth??

i used to get the same problem when my stuff was new - on the small cog. seems the mechanism relies
on a small amount of tension to "set it up" for the next click. i figured out that a quick tug on
the downtube cable sorted it.

and now everything has some milage on it, the problem's gone away.

Also sometimes downshift button gets locked up.

I realized that while taping the bar I moved the hood in such a way that could have interfered
with down shift button, and I thought it being messed with could cause uptight locking. I
corrected that, and the hood lays over the body fine.

Any ideas?

Same problem happens to me when I retape the bars and the thumb shifter is not absolutely clear
of any tape.

Check the tape job, and when you wrap around the shifter with the tape, be absolutely certain there
is no tape interfering with the gears.

This should solve the problem.

It ain't when you try to push one lever while the other is partially pressed, causing neither to
move? That's an internal goings-on, not tape or other interference. I can reproduce it on any
Ergo lever.

You are both describing the same effect. When the small lever is engaged for whatever reason the
long lever won't shift. Holding one's thumb on it is indeed one way to engage the small lever,
locking the mechanism. There was a run of shifters a couple years back with excess plastic flash
occluding the return spring in the small lever. Same "lock"; trimming the excess material away freed
the small ever to move normally back up .

Really these are so darn simple you can see nearly all the bits and how this happens by peeling back
the cover. Take a look!

Like everyone said, check your bar tape. I always used to put a little bit of grease on the
mech. teeth.
