What determines the best crank length to use? Is it your leg length, type of riding, or just preference? I bought a used 56cm 5500 trek and the guy was very tall. The crank length is 177.5 currently and I was wondering what would be the best length for me?

Depends on whether you're a giant or a midget..... I'm 5'9" with a 31" inseam and have bikes with both 175 and 172.5 which seems, for me, to be fine.

how tall are you and what's your inside leg measurement?
inside leg measurement is the easiest way to determine a roughly correct crank length.
Just as a guide, approx 20% of the inside leg measurement is a good starting point.
It also depends on what type of riding you'll be doing and the type of rider you are. Racing sprinters and track riders usually prefer slightly shorter cranks, and 'grinder' types, like triathletes and other time-trialists sometimes go for a slightly longer crank.
