I can't imagine spending $500 on a vacuum. Canister? I'm not sure exactly
what you mean, but an ancient Electrolux canister vacuum can probably be
found on eBay. If the thing sucks up the dirt, who cares if it is the most
modern style?

You really can see the difference between a $100 vacuum and a $500 dollar
vacuum. The Dyson does a much better job than our Hoover ever thought it
could. Just like a lot of people, we've had our share of different vacuums
throughout our lifes(Hoover, Kirby, Eureka, Electrolux) and our Dyson is by
far the best(once you get over the sticker-shock) lol.

Maybe you don't have allergies. I can't imagine spending less. I got a
very good deal on an Electrolux Oxygen Ultra by pricing it online. It's
got excellent HEPA filtration, is light and maneuvarable, has a great
bare floor attachment, powerhead for rugs, and even a powered rotary
upholstery brush.

are canister vacs that have a turbine driven water filter. Nearly
a thousand bucks a pop. A major pain in the butt to run because

No way I'd ever get another for my own use but if I hired a
professional janitor I'd want one in the closet for the crew.

I have dog, 3 cats and allergies. I am sick of spending money on vacuums
that work good out of the box but die a year later. Don't they make a vacuum
that can do it's job and last 5 or more years? My hoover I killed in less
than a year. Kenmore has been limping along. I should have put it out of
it's misery 2 years ago. I wrestled my Kirby to the ground! That wasn't a
pretty site. I am open to suggestions.

Nah, just loneliness added to the mix. :-)

Definitely get rid of any carpeting (I have wool area rugs that can be
turned over for bottom vacuuming) or fabric drapery, keep dust to a
minimum, but keep the pets. Get allergy shots.

I have two cats and a severe dust allergy, even with shots, and I can
stand behind my Oxygen ultra while it exhausts without getting even a
sniffle.

My old Hoover broke constantly.

Thanks. I have a wonderful allergist who aggressively desensitized me,
did in 12 weeks what most immunologists take 18 mos. to do. Now I only
react badly if I get a massive inhalation of mold or dust.

I have a rainbow and agree that it is the best at picking up and not
throwing particles back into the air to find their way into the carpet
again.. the water traps all the dirt and dust.. and if you take care of it,
it lasts forever. I've had mine for 12 years and it still works like the day
we got it.. Every couple of years, I do an extensive cleaning of the unit.
