I have used many of them. My favorite is...Kinetics Fluid trainer. Bullet proof. Smooth. Road like feel. Built to last. Tough as Tyler Hamilton. Leak proof. Get the 'road machine, model with the larger fly wheel if you can afford a few extra dollars. You can buy them direct from Kurt kinetic. Google search for the web site...or check ebay.

I second oneradtec. kurt kinetic is the bomb. the fluid system is sealed and has a magnetic drive. I've gone through 3 winters with mine with no problems. and make sure you get the extra heavy flywheel. 20 mph on the road machine feels like 20mph on the road. you stop pedaling, it coasts, just like on the road. accept no substitute.
how much do they cost? what is the pro and con of owning one?
try rollers. kreitler makes a very nice set. nothing will improve your pedal stroke faster. don't be discouraged if you don't get it right away, nobody does. get the 3" drums -- bigger is too easy and smaller will devastate you.
If you ever get out of the saddle and sprint, get the rollers. Because the trainers that attach to the rear wheel don't allow any side to side movement, you end up stressing the daylights out of your bottom bracket.
thanks for all the advice. i am holding off for a while...it's just got incredibly hot here so I am out riding instead. I'm thinking way too hot for stationary cycling.
cheers.
