I injured my knee last May whilst running and it was operated on early
July 05 after which my surgeon said I'd had a nasty cartilage tear,
which I suspected due to the incredible pain I was in. He said
following the op and tear repairs I should now have 'a good knee' and
that I could start running in about 6 weeks.
In the meantime I did everything I was told, desperate to get back to
being fit. Rested it, kept the support on, visited my physio and
gradually upped my walking. I left it more like 8 weeks to run but had
to stop after only a few weeks, during which I'd built up to 5 miles.
I tried again some weeks later and again the same thing, pain,
swelling etc. Not quite back to square one but not far off. I saw my
surgeon, he suggested more physio, weights and swimming might help
build me back up for running.
I joined a gym and unfortunately (I had one of those years) became ill
just after so have not been as often as I'd have liked. However, I did
progress to some treadmill running but I still had knee pain. Then two
weeks ago I felt as if something had snapped in the same previously
injured knee and now running would be totally out of the question
though I am walking an hour a day.
The gym is probably not going to work out for me time wise, I can't
see when I'll ever run again and despite owning a Concept 2 rower,
rowing hurts my knee too!!!! I wonder if I will ever be fit again.
I am starting a Pilates class tomorrow.
I guess my point to all this is - has anyone experienced this and when
did you progress back to running? My physio says it can take up to a
year to get back to running, a friend who is in a rugby team says
sometimes after such surgery, his team mates have never been able to
play again. (Thouhg others have of course gone back to their sport
with no problems).
I'll have to go back to see my surgeon but would be really interested
to hear of other peoples experiences.
Thanks a lot
