While the guilty verdict is a good thing, I don't know how to feel about the 'up to one year in jail.'

What was reported earlier, but not in that article was the defendants lawyers said in court the the driver had suffered a "mini-stroke" and could not remember what happened. However, immediately after the accident, she did provide a few details to the police at which point she said "I don't think I should be talking to you right now."

The positive about this is Utah has now passed the "Josie Johnson law" or the "3 ft rule" giving cyclists a clear and defined 3 feet on the roads. This was in response to some other accidents where law enforcement didnt' have a good way to prosecute drivers that hit cyclists.

EDIT2: Brainstorm. Does anybody in Colorado know if they have a similar law? As I'm sure all of us know, Jim Price aka: Boudreaux was hit and killed several weeks ago while riding in Colorado. Could the members of cyclingforums.com get this done in another state? Could we get these laws passed in other states? Should we try? Just thinking outloud here.

While the three foot rule sounds great, from what I've seen most of the SUV/Pickup/Van drivers don't know how wide their vehicles are.
They are driving vehicles that are TOO big for them.
If a third party doctor agreed with the mini-stroke thing, that's one thing.
And I might have mercy for this woman has she just come out and say "Yes, I did it, I'm taking responsiblity for my actions." But since she didn't, let her rot in the jail cell and I hope she gets a cell-mate called 'Big Bertha'. I'm sure Bertha will show her the 'three foot rule.'

Up to one year in jail, are you kidding me. If I were to hit a person in a cross walk I'd get at least 5yrs here in california. From what I've seen the Cyclist was doing everything properly and the dumb [censored] driving the suv was the one at fault. Person on bike dies and [censored] gets 1 year. What kind of justice is that. I think the cycling community in Salt Lake City should be waiting for her when she gets out. Make her life a living hell of cyclists always near her. A critical mass sort of thing. Sorry if i sound hostile but I had a teammate of mine killed this year when an unidentified motorist hit her and sped away.
