The Philips 20 watt ES MR16 bulb is extremely good (good beam and
nearly as bright as a 35W MR11) and the housing is much lighter and
more compact than using plumbing supplies. Separate battery required.

Looks like a really good housing. Any idea how he's DIYing it? (Although I
am more likely to make myself a customer than anything else)

The seller is keeping the housing a secret and I haven't guessed what it
is yet. It's an off-the-shelf product that happens to be of exactly the
right dimensions. He buys these aluminium containers complete with
nice-smelling contents! (judging from a remaining trace), and makes a cut
out in the screw-top for the bulb. The can dents easily if you drop it,
let alone crash it -- though it should be cheap to replace -- and the bulb
front isn't protected. But I'm afraid it appeals to the weight weeny in
me. Using a cable tie instead of the Smart QR, the whole lamp is only 28
grams heavier than a Lumicycle halogen while being much more effecient
than any MR11 (when a good bulb is used).

It's just a shame there don't seem to be any *good* non-flood 10 to 15W
MR16 bulbs available. The general quality and beam spread of the non-good
ones are rubbish for cycling (in contrast to cheap MR11s, which are often
okay). Apparently Nightsun make a 10W 18ish-degree one but that's a lot
of $$s and I'm not sure yet if it really is any good. Meanwhile, the 20W
Philips ES is superb.

Asked if if I could get one from him last night. He put a _buy it now_ on
ebay and it was all done in half an hour. Said he'd put a switch in one and
post it today. How bad's that?

Glad you guys like the lamps I make. I use two together all the time
when I'm out night cycling. I was out training with a mate last night
and he was using a 35W Lumicycle lamp and battery. Quite disappointed
he was with light output compared to mine, even with just one of my
lamps on. I was using 30W Philips ES bulbs with 14.4V Lumi batteries.
His battery was also a 14.4v Lumi battery. Lets get one thing straight,
though, I believe Lumicycle produce the best lights available, it's
just that they use MR11 bulbs and I use MR16 Philips Masterline ES, the
best available. Lumicycle really do want to consider getting an MR16
housing and selling these. Pete Biggs, understandably, is into weight
saving and compact lights, but MR16's are not that much larger or
heavier, as he stated, and MR16 lamps comfortably fit my bars.

Hi I use a Philips Masterline ES 35W 8 deg spot too and they are
amazing, I wish I'd seen these holders before today, it would have
saved me a lot of time!

Hi Pepper, must agree these bulbs are the bee's knees when it comes to
light output.

I'm still making and selling these lamps if you know anyone who wants
one. Bit cheappear ouside e-Bay.

Bidding always starts at £15 on eBay and usually finishes at about
£20, so I realy don' t make a lot when you consider listing fee +
final selling price fee + PayPal fee, plus the postage I lay out
getting components delivered.

I frequently get comments from pedestrians about their brightness, and
respeect from other motorists on single track roads is amazing. They
must think it's a car with only one headlight coming towards them.

I should say I am very pleased with this setup, having purchased one of
these custom built lamp units with toggle switch from Mr Cockburn a few
days ago. I opted for the 20w MR16 bulb and have been stunned by the
amount of light output compared to an equivalent MR11 bulb. The housing
gets only warm to the touch, even though overvolted to 14.4 volts using
Li-Ion battery.

As an experiment yesterday I rode down a pitch-dark rural lane
yesterday (plenty in Wales) and switched between my Cateye EL500 1-LED
headlight and this lamp. I nearly crashed the bike when switching to
the LED, it was so dim after the halogen! Now I want to try 30w bulb
🙂, though there seems to be no real need for it at the speeds I ride.
Would be nice to have two 20w (26w overvolted) lamp units side-by-side,
but the batteries are very expensive (£110 from Lumicycle) and the one
4.4 Ah Li-Ion I have wouldn't last very long on 52w. Anyone have any
cheap Li-Ions?

I don't know anywhere for cheap Li-Ions, but do you really want to go down
the route of ever bigger batteries to power ever brighter lights? There's
no end to that :-)

The temptation is the same for me but for the time being I'm sticking with
one 20W Cockburn Special + one 12W Lumicycle: pdg, really isn't it.

A cheap battery can be made from 12 NiMH AA cells. Capacity with top
BetterPower or Vapex AAs (eBay) will only be half of what you're used to
but still that's useful for a second battery. Size and weight is similar.
