  1. Are any of you using a heartrate monitor other than the Polar brand? I
am looking for a basic monitor that has high/low limits, large enough
numbers to read easily and backlighting. Which monitors/brands have you
had success with? Which one's woud you avoid.

    Thanks

Got a Nashbar-labelled cheapo years ago, it fit your requirements, and
worked fine. They've changed what they offer now, but a
bargain-basement model might work for you. It's a nice way to find out
whether a HRM is something you really want to spend time with.

I had a CatEye I used for years, then replaced it with a cheap-o one
from Supergo.com that was ok, but had poor range. It only worked when I
    was in the drops!

Now I have a basic Sigma. No backlight on my model, but hi/low and
simple big numbers without lots of other confusing stuff on the screen.

  4. Try Sigma. I own 3 different cycle computers and 2 HR monitors. All
    work fine with me.

  5. I've had no problems with my Timex Ironman HRM, and also use it as my
    primary watch.

I have a Sigma. It's darn heavy in features making it somewhat
unaccessible, but it does seem to work ok. I've never owned another so
can't make a compare, but this one works as expected (eBay secondhand
    special deal).

  7. I had a Freestyle that died quickly. It seemed to be a battery
problem and the manufacturer offered to look at it, but it was
annoying how fast the thing stopped working.

Have had three Polars that worked well.

Sigma PC-7, usually available for $30 on sale. Works well, and worth
the money to find out if HRM training is right for you. (I've started
using it more for a "dehydration alert" on long summer rides.)

    Email address works as is.

I also use the Polar S725. It's very good of course and the computer
link for downloading heart rate, speed, cadence and elevation graphs is
real nice for geeks. However, I'm also convinced that any cheap
heartrate monitor that reliably shows your heartrate gives 90 % of the
benefits at 20 % of the price or less.

Even features like configurable HR limits are mostly useless because
while cycling you can just mount the monitor on the handlebar where it's
easily seen. Calorie consumption display seems also common on many
models, but it's likely to be inaccurate and I'm not sure what that
    information is needed for anyway.
