OK, many of you know that I have an, um, perhaps un-natural interest in
funeral luncheons -- we called them Dead Spreads when I was Mrs. Church
Lady. And many of you know that I've attended too many of these things
in the last year. And many of you know that I like to post a review to
rfc.
The envelope, please.

The menu consisted of the ubiquitous ham bun sandwiches - or turkey
sames; potato salad (from Cub, I think); baked beans (that's a new one
on me -- must be a standard at Calvary Lutheran in Eagan); Watergate
Salad (and someone had a heavy hand with almond extract); pickles; bars;
potato chips, peanut brittle. They actually put the mustard in a dish
with a spoon! All right, Mount Calvary Church Ladies! The last funeral
I attended had mustard and mayo in plastic packets. Yech.
The buns were fresh and squishy, "buttered" with Shedd's spread. Could
I taste it? No, I saw the CLs spreading the buns when I dropped off the
peanut brittle. Baked beans tasted like Captain Ken's - good choice.
Pickles were pickles. I haven't seen the Watergate salad (why is that
its name?) at one of these affairs before today, I think. Cub's potato
salad is from Mrs. Jerry's, I think. Not bad. I didn't have any of the
bars - nothing looked all that tempting.
Watergate Salad
1 (9-ounce) carton whipped topping
1 small box instant pistachio pudding
1 (1-pound) can crushed pineapple with juice
1 cup miniature marshmallows
1/2 cup broken nuts
Combine the whipped topping and instant pudding. Add pineapple with
juice. Stir in marshmallows and nuts. Chill.
Note the absence of almond extract? Right. I tasted it in the salad,
though. Must be somebody's secret ingredient.
Since getting kicked out of church nearly 20 years ago, we pretty much
stopped going, except for a brief interlude with a brand new group
shortly after getting the boot. It wasn't a good fit (like a
re-marriage too soon after a divorce, I guess) and I will forever be
indebted to the pastors there for their care of and concern for us. I
digress.
The pastor at Mount Calvary is a lively youngster with a gift for
extemporaneous (or else well-practiced) speech. His message about Gerri
was pretty accurate, though he was barely acquainted with her. He said
he got a psych degree before his MDiv. He could have been a Theater
major -- or a longtime member of Toastmasters. Whatever, however, he
was excellent, clear, and engaging. Thanks, Pastor Lillejord. I might
have to start going to church locally again. Handbells were in place -
I like bells. http://www.mtcalvary.com/ -- good luck trying to read the
links -- the ones that are aqua are really nasty to see.
Interment was at the National Cemetery and before leaving the gathering
pavilion, I said my goodbye to Gerri with the sign of the cross on her
casket, my finger dipped in TaB. The last one we'll ever share here.
Rest in peace, Geraldine. And say hi to my mom when you see her. Tell
her I turned out pretty good. "-)
Peace.
