  2. Seems a bit strange that Jeremy Powers has been concetrating on
Cyclocross and been riding in Europe against the best and yet he
finishs only two minutes in front of Chris Horner in his first couple
    of cyclocross races!

Did Chris finish on the same lap as Wells?

Chris rolled thru right as well's was coming up the paved hill. I have
a video of the race, but it came out kinda crappy.

Horner has to be a pretty amazing guy to have pulled that off in those
conditions. I think I noted here before how [censored] he was treated by the
press people at the San Francisco GP TWO YEARS IN A ROW and he never seemed
to get upset about it. I think I was a lot more willing to jump the fence
and punch a reporter or two in the nose than he was. I've a lot of respect
    for Chris Horner.

Given the conditions over the weekend, and his limited Cross/Mtb
racing experience I was really amazed that he stayed upright mostly and
road well. The course was slippery enough all weekend that just having
power wasn't going to do you much good. You had to be able to control
it well enough to be fast also.

The steep section you can see in the background through the trees
below the finish trailer running horizontally across the picture was
actually a long off camber section on the course and was brutal all
    day.
    This:

    and this:

were typical all weekend. The winning riders flew through this section
pedalling all the way mostly. The rest either fell, ran, or picked
their way through witha foot out and lost huge time. Katie may have
been the best on this section that I saw. She rode the damn thing at
full speed, in the drops and didn't bobble that I saw. That was
    incredible.

I got no business telling anyone how to ride off camber or
ruts. I'm too conservative, so the only time I could ever get
through a really bad section is when I would get in over
my head and relax my handling as I gave up all hope in the
    face of certain death,

That said, I'm sure you know all this, if you can pull it off,
blasting through it is the only way to survive. (And turn the
wheel slightly into the hill on an off camber.) There are no
half measures - you're either fast or deathly slow. It's a battle
with the surface - the fast riders' momentum keeps them
from getting the wheel sideways, catching an edge, or getting
the wheel stuck in a rut going the wrong way. The really
good CX descenders and bike handlers I've seen have
all been super skilled, batshit crazy, or both.

A few years ago I was watching a Surf City race at Fort Ord
(the old course among the buildings, that started with a
run-up). There was a nasty sandy descent that loads of
people were eating it on. Every lap, Ben Jacques-Maynes
would fly down it with his hands on the tops - no top mount
levers, he couldn't have braked even if the lever-grabbing
    instinct had kicked in.
