Following an accident, I need to replace the rear derailleur on my Veloce 10 speed Winter bike. I have replaced the chainset with a compact Campag and I need to know:
I currently have a short cage. I will be using a 26 tooth cassette with the 34/50 chainset, will a medium cage derailleur be my best option?
Secondly, do I need to pay out the extra for a 10 speed rear derailleur or will a 9 speed work fine? If it's the jockey wheels that make a difference, could I swap them over with the ones currently on my damaged 10 speed?

Rear derailleurs are sized by total capacity. Total capacity is measured by taking the difference in teeth between the biggest and smallest chainrings and adding the difference in teeth between the biggest and smallest cogs on the cassette. So your total capacity is 50-34 = 16 + 26-13=13 = 29. Official Campagnolo specs are 27 teeth for the short cage and 30-32 or something like that for the medium cage and 37 for the long cage. Usually you can stretch the capacity a few teeth without any problems. You would just have loose chain in the small chainring and smallest 1 or 2 cogs. Not a problem since you don't use those gears. So you should just try the short cage rear derailleur you already own and see if it works fine. It most likely will. If you don't like it for some reason, then get a long cage rear derailleur. No point getting the medium because the long does the same job but is more versatile since you can go to a triple and change inner chainrings to the smallest possible and still have the long cage take up all of the chain slack.

9 and 10 speed Campagnolo rear derailleurs are identical except for the screen printing on them saying whether they are 9 or 10 speed. You could swap the pulleys if it gave you some thrill.

Either will work. Since your rings are 50/34..no 'need' for ther medium or long cage but any will work.

Use the 9s one w/o modification. No need to muck with the pulleys, just put it on, adjust -go ride.

A standard cage rear derailleur will work fine. On most bikes, it will work up to a 13/29 rear cassette.

The pulleys on the recent Veloce 9 speed rear derailleurs say 9-10 on them already. I even use 8 speed pulleys with 10 sp chain w/o any problems.

Not quite correct as the pulley wheel washers (spacers) are different, but that won't matter in this case.
