On an MTB you'd have to have a 2cm slash in just the wrong position for it
to not be fixable. I've ridden home on 1.5" slicks with bigger holes than
that after an incident involving a stick and a brake pad being shifted.

I rode home on Saturday with 50 bucks fixing a 1cm gash in a near new
road tire. I kept seeing the flash of yellow as it rolled around. Now
I'm wondering if I glue in a piece of old tire, how long will it last.

A friend and I did Mitta Mitta to Mt Beauty a little while back. About 3 km into the race, the sidewall on her rear tyre split nearly the whole length of the wall. With some sag wagon help, we cut out a piece of a plastic coke bottle and placed that against the tyre, then covered that with a patch from the old burst tube, put in a new tube and away we went. Mind you we didnt fang it, waiting for the tyre to give way again. My friend got to the bottom of Mt Bogong before the tyre totally gave up the ghost. So she managed about 42 km of fire trail, bog and rock on it. Good job!
