I recall in the Giro d'Italia on the Stelvio when the race took a long
detour because they couldn't get the snow cleared on the Gavia pass.
We waited for hours on the summit of the Stelvio while it snowed off
and on. When a racer finally arrived two hours later than the
promoters had announced, there was a deathly silence in the dense
crowd as Charley Gaul arrived alone, got off his bicycle, pulled out a
whole newspaper that he stuffed under his shirt and vanished into the
fog over the top. The Italian crowd did as though he didn't exist.

That was when I realized what oafs the tifosi are. Other non-Italian
riders could not get anyone in the crowd to give them a newspaper for
the descent... then they cheered when Pambianco, the first Italian
competitor, finally arrived. Closing time was not enforced on this
stage so that anyone who reached Bormio was still in the race. Some
riders reached the summit an hour after Gaul. I'm sure some of them
got a ride down the mountain because it was getting late. That was
truly a death march and the Markleeville ride should not use that term
so loosely.
