  1. My son runs high school winter and spring track, 800, 1600 or 3200
meter, and is looking for a light pair of racing spikes. Anyone have
recommendations on shoes and a good vendor/price?

    Thanks,
    Mike

Get the 6oz Asics 2000 series, and put roofing nails through the
    bottom.

The Bob Kennedy track spikes are tops for track distance runners.

I would recommend eastbay.com. The other poster in this thread referred to
the "Bob Kennedy" shoes, these are the Nike Zoom Kennedys which are available
on eastbay. Keep in mind that track spikes tend to run fairly small. You will
need a half or a full size larger than what you'd buy in a typical running
    shoe.

I've been through a half-dozen racing spikes. Fit, fit, and fit again.
Don't let other people's recommendations override the importance of fit.
Unfortunately, I found that fit is very hard to characterize by trying them
on and walking - I almost needed a couple of miles around the track for them
to settle onto my feet. I suspect this is b/c the soles are so stiff and
the uppers are so soft. I was fortunate that I could try on pairs belonging
to teammates, and sell a pair to a teammate if I found they weren't working
for me. But that said, find the most well-stocked local vendor and visit
them right after they receive their big order of spikes. (Spikes tend to
only be available in good quantity once per year).
Any of the models for "long distance" will work fine, but these tend to
run $60-100/pair. There are more all-purpose models around $50/pair that
will work fine as long as they have the right sole and heel for his running
style. My preference is the stiffest sole possible from heel to toe,
although very few shoes are set up this way.
And a couple of tips: be sure to use a little vaseline or grease on the
threads of the spike inserts from day one. Also, use the shortest spikes
that still give good traction. More spike than necessary makes it easier to
trip, weighs more, and slows your stride.

    Dave
