  1. Laure Manaudou has just set a new world record for the short course
800m, she now holds the record for both the 800m and the 1500m. And
maybe she'll also beat the record for the 400m tomorrow, as she set a
new European record of the distance less than a week ago.

Now I have a question : how come Janet Evans set such long lasting
records in distance long course events, but not in short course events?
Did she never race short course?

Her records in short course yards (the standard SC distance in the US) are
just as durable as her LCM records. Kate Ziegler just failed in convincing
fshion in her recent assualt at the Tom Dolan invite.

Thank you, in fact I thought US swimmers raced both SCY and SCM.
So we won't be able to make comparisons between US and non-US swimmers
    in short course events.

Yard competitions are essentially only swum in the United States; durability
of such a record compared to one for which the entire world is eligible is
    therefore not as significant.

A possible answer to the origianl poster's question may lie in her small
stature. Small swimmers tend to have slower turn-times - they must swim
closer to the wall, and their pushoff speed drops more quickly (all else, of
course, being equal). Long-course swimming mitigates this disadvantage
    compared to short course.

  8. I don't think that Evans ever swam short course meters. Anyone know
    this for a fact?

Her short course yard times are pretty amazing. Most of the world's
greatest female distance swimmers since Evans, afterall, have been
Americans. And none have really come close.

Apparently she swam in the Short Course World Championships in 1993
(and won). But at this time she was not setting new records anymore, I
didn't find anything about swimming short course meters in her best
    years.

(and Laure Manaudou has set a new world record for the 400m too !)

....Kate Ziegler Breaks Evans' 1000y free record...

  11. Thanks for the heads up.

    from the catholicherald.com website:

O'Connell's Kate Ziegler Sets New American Record

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Herald Staff Report
    (From the issue of 12/15/05)

Swimming history was made on a cold December night in Fairfax.

Bishop O'Connell High School senior Kate Ziegler broke Janet Evans'
American record in the 1,000-yard freestyle Dec. 11 at the Tom Dolan
Invitational at George Mason University in Fairfax.

Ziegler's time of 9:24.80 surpassed Evans' mark of 9:25.49 which
was set in 1989 in Chapel Hill, N.C. Evans is considered the greatest
women's distance swimmer in U.S. history. Ziegler's record still
needs to be accepted by USA Swimming before it becomes official.

It was apparent about halfway through her race that Ziegler was on pace
for something special. She swam the first 500 yards in a blistering
time of 4:40.76. Fellow swimmers, coaches and spectators rose to their
feet during the final 200 yards to cheer Ziegler on to victory.

My coworker's son was in the meet, so she was there to see that
record get broken. She knows Katie and her folks, says they're
all very nice people. She told me this morning that Katie swam the
last 100 in 54 secs. (very impressive for those of us who can't even
swim the first 100 in 54 secs).
