Picked up a couple of bits for the fixie today. One was a pair of forks that
will let me run 700C rims and a modern short reach caliper. And they're
chrome. Yay for chrome. The other, and much more pleasing part was the new
Brooks saddle. I paid an extra $5 for big hand beaten copper rivets, copper
rails and chamfered edges. Most pretty. Crappy pics here:

Were the wheels orginally 27inch & you're gong to 700c with the change in forks?
Will a rear 700c be OK in a 27inch wheel'ed frame. Would rear rim brakes be long enough to reach or you're not going the rear anchor?
How will you be painting the frame back? Orignal with all the pin-stripe etc or solid powercoat or ... it's a surprise? :p

Originally 27", going to 700c to give me a choice of decent rims and to allow use of a good current dual-pivot caliper up front. Bikesoiler, the forks and saddle came from Abbotsford Cycles. I'm not planning on running a rear brake so that part is academic. As far as colour scheme goes, I think I might actually keep it a surprise and unveil it at a future Goat sometime in the new year. The way things stand with work and family commitments I probably won't get to tough it again this year.

a 700c fork you picked up cheap? In fact, I'm thinking you may have got
that from Peter Moore? 🙂--

NickIt's just a cheap fork. It'll drop the front of the bike about ½"-¾" and
alter the steering angle by approximately sod all. It's a pretty relaxed
frame in any case. -
Mmmmmm....Brooks. Recall a anecdote (via Marcus @ Walkers Wheels) about how great Brooks saddles are. ie: basically you can still venture forth in public with a piece of studded leather btw yr legs.
I'll go now.

I reckon I have enough bits in the shed to put a fixie together but before I start any tips on dismounting from the beast?
Can you use "clipless" pedals or are toe clips the way to go?

If you normally use clipless there is no reason not to use them on a
fixie. Just make sure you clip out a few pedal revolutions before you
come to a complete stop - or get good a track stands :-) I learned to
use clipless pedals on my fixie - that is, I never had a set on any
other type of bike.Quoted message said:

I've used both. I'm now at the point where I can clip out as quickly as I
need to, so I can pop out ot the last minute or while in a trackstand. If
you're not confident about your ability to do that then it might be an
issue, but I really like my SPDs. As long as you're properly attached I
don't think it really matters. Bare platforms would suck.
