I think in most locales, adding salt to this would be grounds for
    imprisonment. <EG>

Damn, I love creamed chipped beef on toast!

    Thanks, Jimmy!

no way.. toasted bread cubes (unseasoned croutons?) like my mom used to
make. Using half white and half rye cubed and slow baked until crisp and
    dry. Good stuff!

[Making hand signs against evil eye] Not me, mommy! I got that meatball

Don't be such a wuss. Substitute cranberry relish instead?

Yep, that's how it starts! Your eating a turkey sandwich with all the
fixin's and you accidently pull the last whole piece of turkey meat
out with the second to the last bite and are left with a meatless
sandwich. You discover to your delight that the remaining sandwich
still tastes pretty damn good, even without the turkey. So, when the
turkey finally runs out, you make a bread, mayo, lettuce, cranberry
sandwich. Finally, one day, you discover you've run out of lettuce.
Cranberry and mayo ...yep, who needs lettuce?! Finally, no more
cranberry and you're jonesing for a sandwich. While deperately
searching the fridge for more cranberry, you spot a jar of grape jam.
    Hmmmm.... I wonder.

Well, the rest is history. Now you know why one of my fave sandwiches
is mayo and blackberry jam on white bread. Hold the sweet pickles.

It's dreadful, isn't it? Before I met this bunch, who knew I would
voluntarily eat raw oysters, or mushed up eggplant with capers n' things?

Forget the mashed potatoes for SOS... toast or biscuits, that's the ticket.

Now, for mashed potatoes make what my Scottish grandma simply called
"Mince". That is to say, 1 lb. minced (ground) beef, cooked in a skillet
until browned. Pour off all but a tablespoonful of fat. Add lots of
pepper, a bit of salt and 1 cup of water. Add 1-2 Tbs. Worcestershire sauce
and cook until you have a nice clear "gravy". Spoon this mixture over
    mashed potatoes. Oh YUM!

Think I'll make some Mince next weekend!

Chipped beef was the original. That stuff ain't cheap, though.
Somebody got the bright idea to substitute hamburger. When I was a kid,
we had hamburger gravy. It was brown though, and had some spices.
    Still served on toast.

Typically, SOS is all the previous day's hamburgers and breakfast
sausages recycled into a sawmill gravy. It can be pretty tasty if
done right. But, there's always some bozo that can mess anything up.
We had one moron cook at our company cafeteria who figured he was some
kinda aspiring chef entitled to exercise creative license and made
"his" SOS with corn starch. I wanted to submerge his head in it.
