Last week I realised my membership had lapsed without a reminder letter. I
phoned; they checked - yes I'd been missed off the list. I paid there and
then. One week later (this morning) I got my card plus the magazine I would
otherwise have missed. Having made the original mistake I do like and
organisation that accepts the fault; apolgises and then fixes the problem
quickly and competently.

Check the date on the card. I had a similar letter when mine was due in
October. complete with new card BUT the expiry date wad given as
2004!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I rang and paid my dues and asked for the card to be replaced. Since they
had my money I have not heard a thing from them and no new card. This will
be the last time I renew. Last year it took me ages to renew and the
previous year to that I never go t anywhere in trying to get a membership
card. They have also stopped issuing Camp Card International -- I got this
years card just before they stopped it. I don't see much efficiency!

I also doubt that I shall renew my YHA membership anymore after this
ear -- it seems to have lost its way just like the CTC.

I don't think the CTC has lost it's way. They had a bad experience with
outsourcing membership administration (after all their primary aim is
not to be a membership administration org, but to actively promote and
defend cycling) which has hopefully been resolved.

I've really lost any notion of what the YHA is about now. And it would
take more effort to leave than to stay in.

course.

I don't get a reminder notice to ignore though. I'd have to write to
them to tell them I want to leave. They did send me a new card this
year though, a nice solid plastic credit card like one.

Basically nothing that much was accomplished by it AFAIK. Compared a new YH
(Lee Valley?) with an old one (Saffron Walden), talked about the possible
closure of some YHs and looked at the independent hostel sector with the
example of one in Norfolk (Deepdale?) and how the independent hostel sector
is apprently thriving whereas the YHA is not.

I have stayed at Lee Valley recently, when controlling LEL. I don't
actually see the point of the bedding arrangements there.

My room (and probably all the other rooms) had a double bed with a
single bunk above it.

One side of the bed was against the wall so partner can't easily leave
bed. The bunk is unsuitable for small children and, I suspect
embarassing for older members of the family.

I was still in (a tangle in) a sheet sleeping bag so the intrinsic
discomforts of the Youth Hostel remain.

All in all, I didn't think the space was well-used.

Nowt but praise for the CTC and their promptness in notifying me about
membership renewals over the past three years like the mag and their touring
services

YHA - not as many hostels but no complaints about the ones that remain nor
the service obtained

Railways and TOCs wonderful service throughout the UK with the
exception of the voice recognition booking system of Virgin trains

Thats what I got, I sent payment and recieved one more magazine. My
membership hadn't got renewed though.
