  1. I hate utility monopolies. I hate doofus gas company technicians --
and I use that term with grave reservations.

This morning, D met some gas company employees in the back yard as she
schlepped out the trash. (Tuesday is my day to do trash; we're
married, so we share everything.) They were changing out our meter
and told her that our gas would be off for a "couple of hours." No
big deal, right? Well the chuckleheaded snot sniffers apparently
thought she was a unemployed. They neglected to tell her that she had
to be home to get the gas turned back on.

    She wasn't. I wasn't. It wasn't.

We heat the house with gas. We heat the water with gas. It's
December fer cryinoutfugginloud. And we don't have gas when we get
home from -- you know-- WORKING.

So she calls. Gets a computerized pretend-it's-a-real-person
disembodied voice that demands that she talk to it as though it's
human. It discovers that we live in our house, that D has a SSN, that
we have no gas, that no, we don't eat dog feces, and who knows what
else and agrees to call us back when somebody out there in Gasland
    isn't entirely on break.

We were due to leave for a work-related shindig in Dallas, but we
waited for the computer's human consort to call us back. Half an hour
later the much anticipated call comes. Well, it'll be sometime
between now and 10 p.m., says the nice woman on the other end. Pretty
much shoots our 6-8 p.m. Dallas gig in the ass, doesn't it? I can
turn the gas on and I say as much. NO! she cries, NO! You'll be
fined! Fined? Yes, she avers darkly.

Guess the Odoms ain't eating out tonight. They probably should cook
something. The GAS stove isn't an option, of course. But there's the
propane grill and that pork tenderloin D conjured from the freezer
last night. I fume and sputter and begin a beer and a marinade (soy
    sauce, sambal, basil, and ginger).

Then I call another 800 number for the gas company to see if things
will speed up. What the hell? Our gas "service" is supplied by an
outfit called Atmos Energy. That's a truly funny name, isn't it?
Atmos = Atmosphere with the "phere" (fear?) lopped off. Fearectomy
of the atmosphere. Somebody got paid to come up with that name. What
do you do for a living, eh? Bet it's not as fun as pissing on the
English language, muddying the debate over global warming, and
sniggering at customers through a computerized complaint system.
Anyhow, I got another version of the discorporated corporate computer
conundrum with the new 800 number, but after listening to it prattle
on about its programmed expectations of my troubles for a few moments
    I impulsively hit 0.

    Lo! the mighty 0!

Apparently I was upgraded a couple of digital notches in the machine's
heirarchy. Suddenly I was steps away from a carbon-based life form.
It demanded my civil response to a question or two (screaming was not
acceptable, I learned) and eventually I spoke to a woman named Sara.
Or Denise. Or Delilah. Or Jezebel. Something like that. I should
have written it down, but I didn't. "What can I do for you?" "I have
a complaint." Our conversation developed predictably. The pigmeat
marinated. She said she needed to put me on hold and then....

    Beepbeepbeep...

    We were cut off.

I turned the meat over. I put half a bag of frozen okra in an iron
skillet, dosed it with olive oil and chili powder, and popped it into
the (electric) oven at 350F. I pulled a pack of frozen artichoke
hearts out of the (also electric) freezer and put them into a baking
dish with some preserved lemon pieces and pepper.

I dialed again. Did the 0 trick again. Spoke my last words to a
software system for the night (one devotedly hopes), and another Sara
or Bernice or Susannnah or Phoebe or Hermoine or Judith (who
decapitated the evil Holofernes) was at my service. I explained that
I was angry. Livid. Infuriated. I only used the word "[censored]"
once while speaking of the workers who'd left D so uninformed,
however. She (who might have killed a Philistine general in a
previous life) passed me on to her supervisor.

The okra roasted. The meat soaked. I did my level best to explain
how much NoFearofAir Inc. had messed up my Friday night. How much
this had inconvenience me. Not inconvenienced! Saboutaged! Mauled!
Murdered, even! The mouth-breathing, scum-sucking rodents
Atmosphere-with-no-anxiety employed to "serve" its paying customers
had crippled my career! I largely contained myself, though. I only
threatened to turn HER GAS OFF once, for example.

A second work order was issued (great, another one -- that oughta work
like a charm) and I lit the propane grill. I also popped the
artichokes into the oven with the okra. Grand ole okrie. I set the
meat on the grill and put the marinade in a saucece pan with about
half a cup of much-reduced smoked turkey stock. The pot I put on the
grill's side burner. Reduced the stock/marinade. Moved the meat now
and again, pressing it to check for doneness.

Dinner was fine. I sliced the pork and dribbled the salty reduction
over it. Plated it with the roasted veggies. It all went down really
    well.

And the Not-Skeered-o-the-Air guy left a while back after turning on
our gas. Seems he had to light our pilot light, according to a
corporate dictate. Otherwise I might either be fined or sue them when
I do it and burn down the house. At least that's what I think he
    said.

I agree with him. There is a utility of some sort out in this house, on at
least a monthly basis. After one particularly nasty storm, we lost all
power, phone and gas. We cooked in the fireplace. It took 10 days for the
phone company to restore service. We finally canceled SBC and use our cell
phones. It's worked out pretty well so far. Now if I could just find a way
to find coal, I'd dump the gas company too. I'll keep the electric though
    😉

Electric isn't all that reliable either. Last Tuesday and
Wednesday...no less than 8 times the hydro (I'm Canadian) flickered off
then back on. No problem the first time..reset all the clocks, vcr,
etc. Next time in the middle of printing a set of colour pages from
computer. Ok...maybe that's the last time....wrong.... Two days and at
least 8 times. Called them after the 5th time and got amused
apologies...we have two hydro providers, one of which we use. It seems
they can't decide on whose lines the problem exists. ......Sharon

IME, when the electricity goes out it is momentary or of relative short
duration, maybe a couple of hours. When gas goes out, it often seems it is
for major reasons and may be off for much lengthier periods. That is not,
    however, my reason for choice.

I realize it wasn't a pratical suggestion, but I would never have bought a
house that had gas appliances (furnace, boiler, water heater, stove, etc.)
in the first place. I grew up with gas and hated from the moment I knew

Gas really goes out where you live? Yikes. Anyway, I like nothing about
electric for heating and I have to have the forced hot air duct for the
central AC anyway. Also, electric heating is very expensive compared
to gas, at least where I live. The day I get stuck with all electric is
    because
I move somewhere there is no gas in the street.

I wish (only a little, and only for now, and only for me) that this
was a binary group. I could show you a few pictures. I had so many
reasons to buy this house, and they all are about what it looks like.
It's beautiful. Beautiful enough that I'd likely have bought it even
if it had no water heater at all.

To give you an idea of its style check: http://www.atomic-ranch.com/

My house was designed in the late 1940s by an architect (possibly his
senior thesis project at MIT) for his family. It was built in 1952
when it was the most modern house in all of Cow Hill. Its exterior
walls are made of red-stained redwood with white trim at the casement
windows and roof lines. It has an almost-flat roof, pitched about 12
degrees off horizontal in various interlocking planes. It makes witty
use of divided spaces (apparently riffs on the Fibonacci series and
its relation to the Golden Mean of proportions, but I've never
actually measured to make sure) so that a set of planes oriented in a
north/south direction actually produce an east/west axis that becomes
progressively more dense in material and visual effects as one moves
from east to west through the building.

The house sits on three city lots which it shares with the architect's
office (now my studio), seven pecan trees, many fig trees, a big old
live oak, a persimmon tree and more. I've never had it so good in my
life. In fact, the only reason we could afford this place on our
modest salaries is the fact that it is located in a tiny town. In
Dallas it would have cost a fortune. In California, two fortunes.

OBFood: D and I have been invited to dinner tonight at the house of a
new couple in town. They used to live in New Orleans. She's
Peruvian. He's Cajun. They're serving gumbo!

I don't believe your fercocktah story, not a friggin' word... you have
way too much time on your hands that you can lounge about dreaming up
    such fiction.

I used natural gas on Lung Guyland for 'bout 30 years, never went out
not even once. however the electric, phone, and cable went out
regularly, often for days at a time, especially the electric...
transformers had meltdowns all the time, often on the grid hundreds of
miles away. Over the years I had my gas meter replaced for the newer
version at least a half dozen times... never took more than 15 minutes,
and yes someone had to be home, but they only did the swap by a
mutually agreeable appointment... and therein lies the reason why your
story is a friggin' dirty lie... no gas company would ever perform a
meter swap without first entering the premises to close the valve to
    each individual gas appliance.

I now have propane, for heating, cooking, and also connected to my
outdoor grill (which is great because I don't ever need to refill those
teensy bottles, and bulk propane is far less costly). Once each year a
technician calls to make an appointment for checking the integrity of
the system. They go throughout the entire house with an electronic gas
sniffer checking every inch of pipe and all fittings, checking visually
as well. They also check the system from outside with a meter that
detects the slightest drop in pressure... for that they need to close
the valve to each individual appliance. They are very accomodating
    with making appointments.

No natural gas company is going to swap a meter unless they can do the
entire job during one visit, once they begin they are not going to
leave the premises until the entire job is completed and fully tested.
Swapping a meter for a routine upgrade is never an emergency, an
appointment anytime that year is plenty good enough... usually you need
to wait a bit longer for a Saturday appointment, but again, a routine
    swap is not an emergency.

Any gas company, natural gas or propane, will respond immediatly to a
call 24/7 that you smell gas... they have to, it's Fedral Law. You
could have easily reached a real person anytime by calling the
emergency number, every gas company maintains a toll free emergency
    number, it's Federal Law.

Pay your utility bills on time and you won't hate the utility
companys... because when they cut you off for non payment then you must
accept the time they dictate for turn-on... actually they really would
rather yoose PIA deadbeats would drop dead.

Folks don't realize it but deadbeats is the primary reason utility
    rates are so high.
