  1. Last night I was in the gym at the Olympiad in Chippenham. When I left
at about 8:45 I discovered that the quick release clamp had been
removed from my front wheel. Some kids that were hanging around also
discovered that a rear V-brake and cable had been removed from their
bikes along with a front derailleur. The chain had been disconnected
    and then reconnected.

Weird stuff to steal. They would have had to come prepared with hex
    keys so presumably premeditated.

Are they just having a laugh? The stuff stolen seems pretty pointless.
Potentially dangerous as well if you hadn't realized that your rear
    brake was missing.

More dangerous to discover that your front wheel is no longer attached
to the forks. I can live without a back brake, but no front wheel is
rather hard, especially if it happens at speed.

  3. I always carry spare skewers. Their loss/theft renders you immobile as
I know of no trick that can secure a skewerless wheel.

I have a feeling that someone out there may well know though!

Yep, BTSIDIGTTS, left my bike outside the local Safeway on the way to
university one morning (a good few years back). Pedalled off without
realising that some [censored] had drastically loosened by front skewer. I
realised pretty quickly when I lifted my front wheel to get over the kerb
at the start of the cycle path and the wheel continued on about an inch or
two in front of where it should have been. I believe the word "ouch" (or
perhaps something stronger) may have passed my lips as I hit and slid along
    the ash/clinker covered path :-(

Steal one from someone elses bike?

I once had the core of a speedometer cable stolen from my motor cycle - beat
    that!

Once had the tax disc stolen from my m/bike about fifty yards from the
main door of Bristol Police Station.
Walked across road to report it had gone, but didn't notice my clutch
cable had gone until I got back to bike!
Managed for a few days without one too which is not something I would
advise on a BMW 600cc, too easy to do wheelies when starting off...

I had the clutch cable stolen from my Yamaha FS-1M.
Norwich City College was a theives paradise, I lost several
bits a pieces over the time I was there.

I once had the carburettor stolen from my motorcycle in London. I set
off on foot to the local motorcycle emporium. On the way I passed a
number of parked motorcycles with missing carburettors. At the shop I
discovered they did have the model of carb I wanted second hand. It
even had the throttle stop screw spring on it replaced by a
retractable biro spring, just like mine.

I started to speculate aloud about this coincidence, and some big boys
moved menacingly towards me, so I just bought my carb and left.

I once had a quick release bolt for the seat post stolen from the
apartement building locked bicycle room. Weird, and weirder still, when
I went to the LBS to replace it, the owner said something to the effect
of "Oh, yes we've replace quite a few recently".

I would not have thought the market for quick release seat bolts was
    that good.

Its a good job that they did not steal it from your bike.

Very true, but it make sitting down in the bicycle room a real
    problem.
