Can someone please advise if it is OK to replace a Shimano 9 speed cassette with as Shimano 8 speed.
Thanks

Sure. But won't you still have 8-speed shifters?

The shimano 8s and 9s cassettes will both fit the hub, but for index shifting to work, the shifter must match the number of speeds as the cassette. Also a 9s cassette will require a 9s chain. If you have downtube shifters, the shifters can be used in friction mode (without indexing) and will work with any number of speeds.
